HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Saint Anselm and Holy Cross exchanged scoring chances in the early minutes of the first period with both sides registering several shots. Senior goaltender Carina Mancini (Middlefield, Conn.) made four saves in goal for the Hawks in the opening 10 minutes, while Crusaders goaltender Abby Hornung also made four stops during that time frame to keep the game scoreless.
  • Just over 11 minutes into the first period, the Hawks were given a power play after an interference penalty was called on the Crusaders. However, the hosts were unable to convert as the first period ended without a goal for either team.
  • Holy Cross opened the scoring just 1:33 into the second period courtesy of a left-handed shot from the top of the right circle by Lane Lewis that picked out the lower left corner.
  • Schneiderhan looked to get Saint Anselm back into the game shortly after the goal with three of her team's next four shot attempts, but Hornung was able to keep her team in the lead with a few more saves.
  • Midway through the second period, Alexia Moreau helped the Crusaders double their lead with another goal. Moreau skated in on a two-on-one chance and fired a shot into the top right corner that made it 2-0.
  • Just over three minutes later, the Hawks responded with their first goal of the night. Senior Madi Ressler (Brighton, Mich.) passed the puck to the front of the net where Schneiderhan collected and backhanded a shot on goal. Her shot was saved by Hornung, but the puck bounced out to senior Tyra Turner (Andover, Mich.), who buried the rebound at the top of the crease to cut the deficit to 2-1.
  • The Hawks looked to even things up before the end of the second period after earning another power play, but could not find the equalizer despite five more shots on goal before the horn sounded for second intermission. Mancini made four saves at the other end to keep her team down by just a goal entering the third.
  • Holy Cross started the final frame with the upper hand. The Crusaders put five pucks on target within the first few minutes of the third, but Mancini and the Hawks defense were able to stand their ground.
  • Schneiderhan attempted the first couple of shots on goal in the period for Saint Anselm, but Hornung was able to collect both.
  • After another flurry of chances for the Crusaders, the Hawks skated down to the other end and found the game-tying goal 8:05 into the third. Schneiderhan fired a shot through traffic that went off the pipe and in to tie the score at 2-2.
  • Two minutes later, Holy Cross potted the go-ahead goal to regain the lead. Kenzee Hope wristed a shot from the blue line that was deflected by Reghan Chadwick and found the back of the net, giving the Crusaders a 3-2 advantage with under 10 minutes remaining.
  • Saint Anselm fought to tie the game late and attempted eight more shots on goal, but Hornung and Holy Cross were able to hold on to secure the road win.
