HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Saint Anselm started the game on the power play after a pregame procedure penalty was committed by Long Island. However, the Hawks had both of their shot attempts during the opening two minutes turned aside by Sharks goaltender Tindra Holm.
- Long Island opened the scoring just over six minutes into the game with a power play tally. Maggie Culp got the Sharks on the board by pouncing on a loose puck out in front and sliding it into the back of the net to make it 1-0.
- The Sharks built on their momentum with a flurry of chances midway through the first. Hawks freshman goaltender Courtney Stagman (Andover, Minn.) was up to the task, stopping three consecutive shots within a 16-second span to keep her team down by just a goal.
- The freshman netminder had more work cut out for her in the final 10 minutes of the period, as two more Saint Anselm penalties committed gave Long Island a pair of power play opportunities. Stagman was successfully able to deny four more Long Island shots on goal to keep it a 1-0 game.
- In the final minutes of the first, the Sharks committed a five-minute major boarding penalty. The Hawks only fired one shot on goal in the first half of the penalty, but started the second period with over two minutes remaining on the player-up advantage.
- Despite generating several scoring chances in front of goal in the final moments of the power play at the start of the second period, the Hawks still remained scoreless.
- With 50 seconds left in the second period and during another Hawks power play, senior Brinna Martin (St. Michael, Minn.) skated into the offensive zone along the right wing boards. Martin got past the Sharks defenders, angled her way toward goal and fired a shot that rang off the cross-bar. Seconds later, sophomore Brooklyn Schneiderhan (Helena, Mont.) ripped a shot from the blue line that ricocheted off the left post and was cleared away as the score remained 1-0, Sharks, going into the final period.
- Ending the scoring drought for Saint Anselm two minutes into the third was Anderson. The first year Hawk collected a loose puck right in front of the Long Island goal after a turnover was forced by senior Celesta Paolucci (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.). Anderson turned and snapped a shot into the roof of the net for her first career goal to tie the score at 1-1.
- With under four minutes remaining, junior Tyra Turner (Andover, Minn.) stole the puck in the neutral zone, which resulted in a 2-on-1 breakaway. Turner made a last-second cross-crease pass to Schneiderhan, but the sophomore's shot was shut down by Holm to keep it tied and the game headed to overtime.
- Jeannie Wallner won the faceoff for Long Island to begin overtime and pushed the puck ahead to Mikayla Lantto, who wristed a shot into the top right corner for the game-winning goal.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Long Island outshot Saint Anselm 37-29 in the game and also held the edge in total shot attempts, 64-49. The Hawks were able to block 13 shots compared to eight blocks by the Sharks.
- Saint Anselm controlled the faceoff dot throughout the game, winning 30 out of 45. Seniors Maddy McCaffery (Weymouth, Mass.) and Natalie Tulchinsky (Clifton Park, N.Y.) both won 10 or more faceoffs for the Hawks.
- The Sharks scored one power play goal out of four total opportunities, while the Hawks were held scoreless during four power play chances.
- Stagman made 35 saves and registered a .946 save percentage in goal for the Hawks, while Holm made 28 saves between the pipes for the Sharks.
