HOOKSETT, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College softball team split its Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader with crosstown rival Southern New Hampshire on Saturday.
The Hawks, who took game one by an 8-0 score in five innings and dropped game two by a 6-5 score, move to 16-10 on the season with a 6-4 record in NE10 games while the Penmen go to 12-14 overall and 5-5 in league games.
Senior
Kylie Fitzpatrick (Danville, N.H.) and sophomores
Ava Caputo (Waterford, N.Y.) and
Sam Wiberg (Exeter, N.H.) led the Hawks offense with four hits apiece on the day. Caputo collected five runs batted in while Wiberg and Fitzpatrick were credited with three and two each respectively.
Junior
Haile Hicks (Jefferson, N.H.) earned her 11th win of the season with a complete game no-hitter in game one. Hicks fanned 10 batters in the five-inning win. Sophomore
Sophia DiPippo (Cranston, R.I.) made the start in game two and allowed four runs in 6.1 innings of work. Hicks came on in relief and suffered the loss.
Saint Anselm will be back in action on Tuesday, Apr. 11 with a NE10 twinbill at Saint Michael's College. That doubleheader is slated for 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. start times.
GAME ONE: Saint Anselm 8, Southern N.H. 0 (5 Inn.)
Caputo opened game one with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from sophomore
Stephanie Tardugno (Methuen, Mass.). A single from junior
Gracie O'Hara (Shrewsbury, Mass.) put runners on the corners which later allowed Fitzpatrick to reach on an error. The first run of the game came across on a bases loaded walk, drawn by Wiberg before a second bases loaded walk brought home a second run, this one from senior
Jess Persechino (Torrington, Conn.), to give the Hawks lead to 2-0.
A pair of strikeouts for the Penmen would limit the damage to two runs and get them out of the bases loaded jam.
Caputo pushed the Hawks lead to 6-0 with a grand slam in the top of the third inning. A single, a hit by pitch, and a walk loaded the bases for the sophomore who sent her second homer of the season over the left field fence.
The Hawks pushed across a pair of runs on a two-run single from Wiberg in the top of the fifth, scoring O'Hara and Fitzpatrick who both singled with two outs earlier in the frame.
Hicks would strike out the side to close game one in five innings, 8-0.
For the junior, the no-hitter is the second of her collegiate career.
GAME TWO: Southern N.H. 6, Saint Anselm 5
Saint Anselm put up two runs in the top of the first, matching game one. Caputo led off with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Tardugno. Caputo scored on a single from Fitzpatrick, who later scored on a double from Wiberg to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead.
Sophomore
Alyssa Wironen (Leominster, Mass.) led off the second with a single and would reach third on a pair of groundouts. Caputo singled, which scored Wironen, and gave the Hawks a 3-0 advantage through two innings of play.
Saint Anselm managed to put runners on second and third with two outs in the top of the third inning but was unable to manufacture a run.
Southern New Hampshire also got runners to second and third in its half of the third but DiPippo worked out the trouble with a pair of strikeouts.
The Penmen loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth but DiPippo and the Hawks once again got out of the jam with a ground out, preserving the 3-0 lead.
Saint Anselm extended its lead to 5-0 in the top of the fifth inning as Wironen managed to reach on an error, which allowed two runs to score on the play. A pair of hits from Fitzpatrick and Wiberg set up the scoring chance for the Hawks.
Southern New Hampshire loaded the bases again in the fifth inning but a double play, turned by O'Hara, kept the hosts off the scoreboard.
The Hawks were unable to push across a run in the top of the seventh inning as the team got three runners on base but a ground out sent the teams to the bottom of the inning with Saint Anselm leading 5-0.
The Penmen put runners on first and second following a fielder's choice and a single before a second single loaded the bases. A base hit from
Jordyn Resetar scored a run before a double pushed across two more to make the score 5-3. After a foul out got the Hawks to two outs in the inning,
Abi Gray sent a three-run home run over the left field fence to give the Penmen a 6-5 walk off win.
