Softball splits NE10 doubleheader at Assumption

ORCESTER, Mass. – The Saint Anselm College softball team split its Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader at Assumption University on Tuesday.

The Hawks move to 22-13-1 on the season with a 12-7-1 record in conference games while the Greyhounds go to 18-16 overall and 10-10 in NE10 play. Saint Anselm returns to the South Athletic Fields on Friday, Apr. 28 for a conference doubleheader against the University of New Haven.

Sophomore Ava Caputo (Waterford, N.Y.) led the Hawks with four hits and four runs batted in on the day. Senior Kate Irwin (Milford, Mass.) collected three hits while junior Gracie O'Hara (Shrewsbury, Mass.), senior Jess Persechino (Torrington, Conn.), and sophomore Stephanie Tardugno (Methuen, Mass.) were credited with two hits apiece.

Senior Ava Vincequere (Shrewsbury, Mass.) collected the game two win in her first collegiate start, improving to 4-0 after allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out two. Junior Haile Hicks (Jefferson, N.H.) suffered the game one loss after giving up three runs, two earned on seven hits. Both student-athletes collected complete-game efforts on Tuesday.

GAME ONE: Assumption 3, Saint Anselm 2

The Greyhounds would strike first in the bottom of the first inning as Jordan Dwyer led off the frame with a single. She would eventually reach third on a sacrifice bunt. Kaitlyn Cahill doubled to score Dwyer with two outs before scoring a second run on a single in the next at-bat from Heather Junjulas.

Assumption loaded the bases in the bottom of the second inning but Hicks would get a fly out to get out of the jam and keep the Hawks deficit at two.

The Greyhounds tacked on a third run in the bottom of the fourth as Summer Sheerin came around to score on a throwing error, pushing the lead to 3-0.

Saint Anselm got on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth inning. Senior Meghan Gibbons (Litchfield, N.H.) worked a pinch hit walk before junior Hannah Ramer (Rehoboth, Mass.) came on to pinch run. After reaching second on a passed ball, Ramer would score on a single up the middle from Caputo. Tardugno also singled which allowed Caputo to reach third but a fly out ended the Hawks threat.

In the top of the seventh, the Hawks got a pair of runners to second and third with one out. Caputo laced a single into left which scored one run but Irwin was thrown out at the plate. The Hawks would try to take advantage of open bases following the out, but were tagged at third to close game one with Assumption grabbing a 3-2 win.

GAME TWO: Saint Anselm 7, Assumption 3

Assumption pushed across the first run of the second game in the bottom of the first. After a pair of singles, Dwyer would steal third and come around to score on a throwing error for the game's opening score. However, Vincequere would strand two runners to limit the damage.

Saint Anselm responded with three runs in the top of the second. After a pair of walks and a single loaded the bases, Irwin singled to score one run before Caputo followed with an RBI single of her own. Sophomore Sam Wiberg (Exeter, N.H.) would cap the Hawks scoring in the inning as she came across to score on a wild pitch.

Assumption got one run back in the bottom of the third on a fielder's choice with Dwyer scoring on the play, making the score 3-2 in favor of Saint Anselm.

The Hawks added three more runs in the top of the fourth. A Caputo single plated Persechino, who singled to lead off the inning, before a Tardugno single brought home Irwin. O'Hara recorded a fourth consecutive single for Saint Anselm which scored Caputo. Saint Anselm loaded the bases later in the inning but a strike out and a fly out stranded three runners.

O'Hara launched a solo home run in the top of the sixth which gave the Hawks a 7-2 lead.

Assumption replied with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh which made the score its final of 7-3.
