BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Saint Anselm women's lacrosse team grabbed its third consecutive win to open the 2023 season, downing D'Youville College by a 17-6 score on Sunday.
The Hawks improve to 3-0 for the fourth consecutive season and will open Northeast-10 Conference play at Saint Michael's College on Wednesday, Mar. 8. That will also be the second of four straight games played away from the Hilltop. The Saints drop to 0-2 in the early going of their 2023 campaign.
Senior
Taylor Cobain (East Greenwich, R.I.) paced the Hawks offense with four goals and three assists for seven points. Cobain eclipsed the 100-career points mark in the contest and now sits at 105 in her time on the Hilltop, coming from 78 goals and 27 helpers.
Senior
Lexi Palmisano (Woburn, Mass.) netted three goals and added an assist for four points while juniors
Maggie Fitzgerald (Holliston, Mass.),
Alison Ferullo (North Andover, Mass.), and
Jess Sullivan (Wrentham, Mass.) were credited with two goals each.
Freshman
Lucy Davis (Roswell, Ga.) was one of four Hawks with one goal, marking the first of her collegiate career.
The Hawks opened the scoring just 1:09 into the contest on a goal by Palmisano and doubled the lead just over one minute later when junior
Isabella Stuzynski (Bedford, Mass.) found the back of the cage for her second goal of the season.
Saint Anselm added three more goals to open up a 5-0 advantage before D'Youville netted its first coming with 7:43 left in the first quarter from the cross of
Julia Bernas.
Palmisano and Ferullo would combine to tally two more goals in the closing minutes of the first quarter as the Hawks bolted out to a 7-1 lead through the opening 15 minutes of play.
The Hawks would tack on six more in the second frame while limiting the Saints to one marker in the quarter, pushing the Saint Anselm lead to 13-2 at the half.
After goals from Cobain and Ferullo to open the third, Bernas netted her second goal of the game with 2:59 left in the stanza before
Madison Buck cut the Hawks advantage to 15-4 in the first minute of the fourth quarter.
The sides traded a pair of goals each, following the Buck tally to push the score to its eventual final of 17-6.
Sophomore
Elizabeth Driscoll (Marblehead, Mass.) made a career-best seven saves in her third win of the season.
The Hawks attempted 37 shots in the game, putting 24 of them on target. The Saints recorded 21 shot attempts and put 13 of them on target. Saint Anselm held a 16-13 edge in draw controls in the contest.
