Field Hockey Advances to NE10 Championship Game with 3-1 Win Over Adelphi

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Head coach Carolyn King-Robitalle earned her 150th head coaching victory on Friday as the Saint Anselm College field hockey team earned a 3-1 victory over Adelphi University in the semifinal round of the Northeast-10 Championship tournament from Grappone Stadium. The win gives the Hawks (17-3), ranked No. 5 in the latest National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) poll, a spot in the league's title game on Sunday, Nov. 5. The appearance in the NE10 championship game will be the fourth in program history for Saint Anselm and first since winning its only league title in 2019.

UP NEXT:
  • The No. 2 seed Hawks travel to top-seeded Assumption University in Worcester, Mass. for a 1:00 p.m. match-up with the Greyhounds on Sunday, Nov. 5. Assumption escaped their Semifinal contest with a 3-2 win over No. 4 seed Pace University. Saint Anselm handed Assumption it's only loss in NE10 play this season, a 2-1 double overtime contest on Oct. 28.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Adelphi struck first at the 3:30 mark into the first quarter, with Jillian Riche evading the Hawks defense and finding the back of the cage, giving the visitors the early 1-0 edge.
  • Sophomore Marissa Politano (Acton, Mass.) netted the Hawks' equalizer in the second quarter off a helper from junior Amanda Lewandowski (Franklin, Mass.). The game remained deadlocked at 1-1 at the halftime break.
  • In the third quarter, junior Chloe Kapsambelis (Merrimack, N.H.) tallied her third goal of the season, the eventual game-winner, off an assist by junior Abby Breznyak (Oakland, Maine) to put the Hawks in front 2-1.
  • Clinging to the one-goal advantage into the fourth, sophomore Maggie Burchill (Braintree, Mass.) notched her seventh goal of the year off an assist from senior Abbey Bevens (Pelham, N.H.) with 2:28 remaining to cement the 3-1 win over the visiting Panthers.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Saint Anselm held a 20-3 advantage in shots on goal in the contest, as the defensive unit allowed just one shot on goal after the first quarter.
  • Saint Anselm also held an 11-4 edge in penalty corners in the game.
  • The win marks career coaching victory No. 150 for Saint Anselm head coach Carolyn King-Robitaille, who is in her 12th season with the Hawks.
  • Saint Anselm is 1-2 all-time in the NE10 Championship game, having finished as league runners-up in 2016 and 2018 before bringing home the Hawks' first title in 2019, a 2-0 victory over cross-town rival Southern New Hampshire University.
