HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Hawks started the game by firing four shots in the opening six minutes of play forcing two saves from Mercy goalie Alexandra Giordano. At the 9:12 mark, Kelly Rosenfeld slotted the first shot for Mercy past senior netminder Mackenzie McConnell (Concord Township, Maine) to put the Mavericks up 1-0. Saint Anselm earned a penalty corner a few minutes later resulting in a shot on target from sophomore Millie Forster (Cholmondeley, Cheshire, England). After Giordano saved Forster's shot, sophomore Maggie Burchill (Braintree, Mass.) collected the ball and rifled it into the back of the cage to even the score at 1-1.
  • Approximately one minute later, junior Ava Rayfield (Dover-Foxcroft, Maine) doubled Saint Anselm's lead squeezing the ball into the bottom left corner off a centering pass from sophomore Marissa Politano (Acton, Mass.).
  • In the second period, junior Amanda Lewandowski (Franklin, Mass.) joined in on the scoring swatting the ball mid-air to put the Hawks ahead 3-1. At the 21:18 mark, senior Maddie Davis (Exeter, N.H.) stepped up to take the penalty corner for the Hawks. She dished the ball out to Forster who drilled a shot from the top of the arc into the bottom right corner to make it a 4-1 advantage.
  • The Mavericks responded in the opening four minutes of the third period after Kate Ringstad ripped a shot from the center of the crease through traffic to cut Saint Anselm's lead in half. In the fourth period, Lewandowski netted her second score of the day off the assist from Burchill to cement the 5-2 victory over Mercy.
