Game Recap: Field Hockey |

No. 6 field hockey sneaks past Pace, 1-0

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – The nationally-ranked Saint Anselm College field hockey scored the lone goal of the game in the third quarter against Pace University on Saturday, securing a 1-0 victory in Northeast-10 Conference action.

The Hawks move to 2-3 overall on the season after winning the team's first two games in NE10 play. Pace, who eliminated Saint Anselm from last season's conference playoffs, falls to 3-3 on the year and to 0-1 versus the league.

Just 7:11 into the second half of a game where the start time was delayed by one hour, senior Maggie Malloy (Canton, Mass.) scored her first goal of the season by sending in a left-to-right cross that rode up the stick of the Pace defender and right into the goal. Malloy now has a two-game point streak, handing out an assist the game prior against Saint Michael's.

It was a tightly-contested game throughout as both teams combined to place just five shots on goal. It was Malloy who had the first golden chance of the game, ringing the post just 8:57 into play. Prior to her goal to open the third, she also had her team's other shot on goal in the game just 45 seconds in – it was saved by Pace netminder Alina Buerger.

The last shot of the game was off the stick of a Pace player with under 10 minutes to go, but Hawks netminder Mackenzie McConnell (Concord Township, Maine) made the last of her three saves to preserve the clean sheet.

In her 21-game career, McConnell now has 10 shutouts and is riding a scoreless streak of 138:25 – the Hawks have not been scored upon since the third quarter against No. 3 East Stroudsburg on Sept. 10.

Saint Anselm hosts Adelphi on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 11 a.m.
