GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – The fifth-seeded Saint Anselm College softball team bowed out of the NCAA Division II East Region Championship on Friday, falling to No. 22 nationally and the East Region top-seed Adelphi University by a 2-1 score in nine innings.
The Hawks see their season come to a close at 28-17 while the Panthers improve to 42-12 and will continue on in the East Region Championship. Adelphi will play the eighth-seed Pace University in the second elimination game on Friday.
Saint Anselm concludes its fourth consectuive and sixth overall appearance in the NCAA Division II East Region Championship. The team reached 20 wins for the sixth time in the last eight seasons under Head Coach Jill Gagnon.
Sophomore Gracie O'Hara (Shrewsbury, Mass.) paced the Hawks offense with two hits in four at-bats with one run scored. Junior Kylie Fitzpatrick (Danville, N.H.) recorded one hit and one run batted in while junior Kate Irwin (Milford, Mass.) and freshman Audrey Arsenault (Stow, Mass.) registered a hit each.
Sophomore Haile Hicks (Jefferson, N.H.) suffered just her sixth loss of the season on Friday. Hicks went 8.2 innings pitched, surrendering two runs, neither earned, on six hits. Hicks fanned four batters. Hicks threw 6.0 innings or more in each of the last five games for Saint Anselm in 21 of her 29 appearances this season.
Lauren O'Neill reached on an error with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning and would advance to second on a sacrifice bunt. A single by Brianna Pearson would plate O'Neill as the game's winning run, giving the Panthers a 2-1 victory.
Saint Anselm drove in the game's first run in the top of the first inning as O'Hara singled through the left side. She would reach second on a walk issued to senior Bre Klaiber (Ironton, Ohio) and come around to score on a single to right center field by Fitzpatrick, giving the Hawks a 1-0 lead.
Adelphi would tie the score in the bottom of the seventh when Jaden Farhat drew a four pitch walk. She would reach third on a single by Ziara Shreter. Ashley Lombardi got a ball deep enough onto the outfield grass to score Farhat and force extra innings.
