SHELTON, Conn. –
The Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team captured a weekend sweep of Post University with a 3-0 victory on Saturday.
The Hawks improve to 10-11-3 on the season and to 7-5-3 in New England Women's Hockey Alliance play while the Eagles fall to 5-20 overall and to 2-12 against the league. Saint Anselm returns to action on Friday, Feb. 18 and Saturday, Feb. 19 when Sacred Heart University comes to the Hilltop for a NEWHA weekend series.
Freshman
Tyra Turner (Andover, Minn.) netted two goals for the second consecutive game and has now scored eight goals in the team's last four contests. Senior alternate captain
Kelly Golini (Tewksbury, Mass.) scored the other Hawks goal, extending her point streak to seven games, dating back to Dec. 2 in the win over Brown.
Saint Anselm scored two shorthanded goals in Saturday's victory, accomplishing that feat for just the fourth time in team history. It was last done by the Hawks on Dec. 3, 2010 at Williams –
Rosemarie Giarrusso '13 and
Aly Zappen '12 found the back of the net on penalty kills against the Ephs.
The teams skated to a scoreless opening two periods of play. During those 40 minutes, Saint Anselm held a 36-to-17 advantage in shots on goal, placing 19 on frame for Eagles goaltender
Kaitlyn Daly to reject in the first period alone.
Just 4:10 into the third period, Turner collected a loose puck in the neutral zone and made a move on a Post defender to get a one-on-one with Daly. The freshman put the puck on her backhand and lifted the shot attempt over the Eagles netminder to give Saint Anselm a 1-0 lead while a player down.
The Hawks quick strike attack doubled its lead with another shorthanded tally just 15 seconds later. Senior alternate captain
Kendra Currier (Middleton, Mass.) cleared the puck from her own defensive end where it was knocked down in the neutral zone by Golini. Skating with the puck, Golini fired a shot from the top of the slot, beating Daly just under the crossbar to give the Hawks a 2-0 edge.
Saint Anselm added insurance with 1:22 left on the clock as Turner gained entrance to the Eagles zone after a long stretch pass by Currier. Turner weaved through two defenders and put a wrist shot on goal, beating Daly for her second tally of the day to give the Hawks a 3-0 lead.
The Hawks finished the game with two shorthanded goals while going one-for-four on the power play. The Eagles were scoreless in two power play opportunities.
Junior
Allie Kelley (East Berne, N.Y.) recorded her third shutout on the season, making 24 stops in the winning effort. Daly finished with 47 saves on 50 shots on goal for Post.
