WORCESTER, Mass. – In a battle of nationally-ranked programs, the Saint Anselm College field hockey team saw its season come to a close in the First Round of the NCAA Division II Field Hockey Championship.
No. 6-ranked Saint Anselm (14-7) scored the game's first goal, but Assumption (15-5), ranked seventh nationally, fired off the next two, including one just 30 seconds into overtime, to capture a 2-1 victory over the Hawks. The Greyhounds picked up their first NCAA postseason win in the process.
Assumption, who allowed just one shot attempt to Saint Anselm in the game's final 15-plus minutes, will head to Seattle as one of the final four teams in NCAA Division II still standing, taking on top-seeded East Stroudsburg at 5 p.m. this Thursday, Dec. 1.
In five-on-five overtime, the Hawks lost the ball deep in their offensive zone. Assumption countered, racing up the field and creating a two-on-one. Winning races through the midfield, Assumption got behind the Hawks backline and Mia Salah beat the Hawks netminder, one-on-one, to produce the game-winning goal.
Saint Anselm got on the board first as senior Shelby Dunn (Yarmouthport, Mass.) scored just 6:15 into the second half. On a penalty corner for the Hawks, Assumption attempted to clear the ball but it spilled right onto the stick of Dunn near the left post – she flicked it home short-side for her team's lone strike.
Following a save by Saint Anselm just minutes later, the Hawks were unable to clear the rebound from inside the arc on a penalty corner. Callie Beauparlant gathered the ball for Assumption and fired a long-range shot that found the back of the cage, tying the game at one in the game's 44th minute.
Hawks goalkeeper Mackenzie McConnell (Concord Township, Maine) gave up two goals on four shots while Kylie Gargiulo stood tall for the Hounds with four saves on five attempts. Each of the last five games between Saint Anselm and Assumption have been decided by one goal.
Assumption held the slight edge in shots taken, nine-to-eight, while Saint Anselm was awarded seven of the game's 11 penalty corners.
