MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team suffered a 2-0 loss to Franklin Pierce University in Saturday's Pink in the Rink contest.
With the loss, the Hawks drop to 7-8-1 on the season with a 7-3-1 mark in New England Women's Hockey Alliance contests while the Ravens move to 4-6-1 overall and 3-2-1 in league tilts. Saint Anselm is back in action on Friday, Nov. 18 at Saint Michael's College with the opening puck drop slated for 7:10 p.m. in South Burlington, Vt.
Prior to the start of Saturday's Pink in the Rink contest, Kerry Porazinski, mother of senior
Devin Porazinski (Parker, Colo.) participated in a ceremonial puck drop. This year marked the 12th annual Pink in the Rink celebration on the Hilltop with the men's and women's ice hockey programs raising awareness for breast cancer research.
Senior goaltender
Allie Kelley (East Berne, N.Y.) made 18 saves in the contest while her counterpart for the Ravens,
Jill Hertl posted a 26-save shutout.
After a nearly scoreless opening 20 minutes of play, the Ravens struck first at 19:21 of the first period.
Lindsey Dumond managed to bury a rebound chance on the power play following a shot by
Emilie Prive that was turned aside by Kelley.
The Hawks had a great chance to tie the contest with just over three minutes left in the second frame as junior
Brinna Martin (St. Michael, Minn.) fired a slap shot from the point that forced Hertl to make a flashy glove save.
Avery Farrell gave the Ravens a 2-0 lead with just seven seconds left in the second period. After Franklin Pierce forced a turnover in the Saint Anselm defensive end, Farrell collected the loose puck and sent a wrister into the top half of the goal to give the visitors a two-goal lead through 40 minutes of play.
Saint Anselm had five power play chances in the contest, three in the second period and two in the third, but were unable to convert with the extra skater. Franklin Pierce was one-for-four on the power play.
The Hawks held a 26-20 edge in shots on goal, led by junior
Natalie Tulchinsky (Clifton Park, N.Y.) who had six. The Ravens won 25 of 48 faceoffs in the contest but graduate student
Kelly Golini (Tewksbury, Mass.) won a game-high 15 draws for Saint Anselm.
The Saint Anselm defense blocked 12 Franklin Pierce shot attempts with Golini, Martin, senior
Gabrielle Huson (Edina, Minn.), and junior
Abigail Blair (Grand Island, N.Y.) blocking two shots apiece.
