HAMDEN, Conn. – The Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team suffered a 7-1 loss on Saturday at No. 7/7 Quinnipiac University.
The Hawks drop to 0-5-0 on the season and will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 14 when Sacred Heart University comes to the Hilltop for a 7 p.m. puck drop. The battle will be the New England Women's Hockey Alliance opener for Saint Anselm. The Bobcats, who are ranked No. 7 in both the USCHO.com and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine national polls, improve to 6-0-0 on their season.
Senior
Allie Kelley (East Berne, N.Y.) tied a program record and her career high in the goal for the Hawks, posting 58 saves. She now sits in second in program history in career saves with 1,269 and needs just 92 to overtake the top spot by a Saint Anselm student-athlete.
The Bobcats struck first at 4:40 of the first period on goal by
Mallory Mauracher. Mauracher redirected a shot from
Maddy Samoskevich to take a 1-0 lead.
Quinnipiac would double the lead at 1:29 of the second period on a goal by
Sadie Peart. Peart collected a pass and fired a shot by Kelley into the right side of the net.
Senior
Margaret Sullivan (Burlington, Mass.) netted her first goal of the season to cut the Hawks deficit to one at 3:34 of the second stanza. Sullivan beat
Catie Boudiette on a breakaway for the tally.
Quinnipiac would go on to strike three more times in the period with two of the goals coming on the power play. The Bobcats would take a 5-1 lead through 40 minutes of play.
The Bobcats posted two tallies in the final frame to take the 7-1 win.
Saint Anselm was scoreless on two power play chances while Quinnipiac was three-for-five with the extra skater. The Bobcats put 65 shots on goal in the contest while the Hawks fired seven shots on target. Quinnipiac nearly doubled the Saint Anselm wins from the faceoff circles, collecting 45 of 68 wins from the dots.
As a team, Saint Anselm blocked 20 shots in front of Kelley and were led by senior
Gabrielle Huson (Edina, Minn.) who had four blocks.
