Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Women's ice hockey ties LIU, 1-1

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team skated to a 1-1 tie with Long Island University on Friday.

Entering play with an unblemished record in New England Women's Hockey Alliance play (10-0-0), LIU sees its overall record stand at 12-9-2 following the draw. Saint Anselm, who had not played a game since Thursday, Dec. 2 against Brown, is now 6-10-2 and 3-4-2 against NEWHA opponents.

Saint Anselm netminder Allie Kelley (East Berne, N.Y.), the single-season record holder for saves in a Saint Anselm uniform, crossed the 600-save threshold on Friday and finished the day with 38 stops to her credit. LIU's Ceilidh Campbell, a forward, was forced to play in goal for the Sharks and made 18 saves on 19 shots in her debut.

Freshman Tyra Turner (Andover, Minn.) got Saint Anselm on the board just 3:22 into the second period, wrapping the puck around the goal and beating Campbell five-hole. The play was set up along the near-side boards as senior Erin Meyers (Saint Paul, Minn.) won a puck battle along the glass, allowing Turner to carry the puck in deep behind the LIU net and score.

LIU's Jeannie Wallner tied the game at one just over three minutes later. A shot wide by Saint Anselm on offense was quickly turned around and brought up ice by LIU's Carrigan Unpherville. A nifty right-to-left pass across the slot was buried by Wallner, who beat Kelley on the far side of the net for the equalizer.

With the score tied at one after two periods, LIU controlled play for the remainder of the game, firing 18 of the game's final 28 shots. Kelley was up to the task, however, making saves on all of the Sharks late attempts.

The Sharks attempted 71 shots in the game and won 35 face-offs, limiting the Hawks to just 29 victories at the dot.

LIU and Saint Anselm return to action Saturday, Jan. 15 at 3 p.m. in Sullivan Arena.
