No. 3 field hockey eases past Franklin Pierce, 6-1

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College field hockey team scored six unanswered goals in Saturday's 6-1 victory over Franklin Pierce University.

The Hawks, ranked third in NCAA Division II, move to 1-0 on the young season while the Ravens (0-1) fall to Saint Anselm for the 14th consecutive game. Saint Anselm, the 2019 NCAA Division II Championship runner-up, will travel to New Haven for a 3:30 p.m. contest tomorrow, Sunday, Sept. 5, at 3:30 p.m. in West Haven, Conn.

Franklin Pierce got on the board first, stunning the Hawks with a tally in the game's first four minutes. It was all Saint Anselm from that point forward as the hosts outshot the Ravens by a commanding 27-5 margin and were awarded 12 of the game's 16 penalty corners.

Senior McKenzie Robinson (Mont Vernon, N.H.) tied the game at one as a tip by freshman Amanda Lewandowski (Franklin, Mass.) was batted out of the air and inside the left post with under a minute left in the first quarter.

Lewandowski responded with a tally of her own just before halftime, creating a 2-1 lead for the Hawks at the half. Sophomore Abbey Bevens (Pelham, N.H.) put home the third consecutive Hawks shot attempt just seconds into the second half, scoring off a Carly LaCasse (Sagamore Beach, Mass.) blast that ricocheted off the post for the team's third goal.

Junior Avery Tucker (Westbrook, Maine) scored in the game's 49th minute, using a booming blast from just inside the arc to up the Saint Anselm lead to 4-1. Senior Emilie Martin (Yarmouth, Maine) built upon the Hawks lead, converting a pass from Bevens before sophomore Maddie Davis (Exeter, N.H.) sent home a feed from classmate Shannon Walsh (Chelmsford, Mass.), earning them both their first collegiate points of offense.

A steady Saint Anselm defense gave up four of the five Franklin Pierce shots in the first 13 minutes of play, but the Ravens mustered just one shot across the remaining three-plus quarters of play. Sophomore Mackenzie McConnell (Concord Twp., Maine) recorded her second career win for the Hawks, making two saves on three shots.

Silver Clukey had the lone Franklin Pierce goal – it was set up by Alicia Hottleman. MacKenzie Potvin, a native of nearby Goffstown, N.H., yielded six goals on 16 shots to draw the loss. Clukey's marker was just the third scored by a Northeast-10 Conference opponent against Saint Anselm since the start of the 2019 season.
