No. 8 field hockey blanks Southern Connecticut State, 5-0

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Saint Anselm College field hockey team came away with a convincing 5-0 victory over Southern Connecticut State University on Saturday at Jess Dow Field.

Saint Anselm, who held the overwhelming 21-to-2 advantage in shots taken, moves to 5-2 on the year and to 3-1 against Northeast-10 Conference opponents. Southern Connecticut State falls to 2-4 overall and to 2-2 versus the league.

The Hawks and Owls played a scoreless first period before striking three times in the second quarter. Junior Maeve Murphy (Scituate, Mass.) cashed in on a breakaway before senior Sarah Bagley (North Andover, Mass.) reached a new single-season high for goal scoring (three), pushing home a rebound just four minutes later.

Senior Emilie Martin (Yarmouth, Maine) concluded the first half scoring for Saint Anselm, creating a 3-0 lead at the break following a penalty corner. She also reached a single-season high mark for goals scored, tallying three markers in seven games so far.

Without a shot in the first half, the Owls were unable to slow down the Hawks offense. Sophomore Shannon Walsh (Chelmsford, Mass.) scored just 5:06 into the second half, scoring off an assist from classmate Maddie Davis (Exeter, N.H.), before senior McKenzie Robinson (Mont Vernon, N.H.) rounded out the scoresheet for the Hawks with a goal at 50:07.

Saint Anselm netminder Mackenzie McConnell (Concord Township, Maine) picked up another clean sheet, making two saves without conceding a goal. Janelle Ward made seven saves on 12 shots on frame by the Hawks. Kiley Jackson and Brianna Shaw fired the only two shots for SCSU.

The Hawks return to action Wednesday, Sept. 29, hosting Bentley at Grappone Stadium in a 5 p.m. game.
