MANCHESTER, N.H. – Senior Sarah Bagley (North Andover, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal in overtime, lifting the No. 3-ranked Saint Anselm College field hockey team to a 1-0 victory over Pace University on Saturday.
The Hawks, ranked third in NCAA Division II by the National Field Hockey Coaches' Association, move to 3-0 on the year while Pace drops to 2-2. Saturday's tilt was the Northeast-10 Conference opener for both teams.
Saint Anselm has posted a dominant 23-2 overall record at Grappone Stadium since 2018. The Hawks also have a combined record of 39-10 since the start of that campaign.
With a long hit upcoming for Saint Anselm, senior Andrea McNeil (Canton, Mass.) immediately changed fields with the ball and found the stick of Jackie Gaumer (Thornton, N.H.) on the left side. She swiftly sent a ball forward to Bagley, who was a few yards inside the arc. Spinning around, she fired the shot past the Pace goalkeeper, beating her to the far post for the game-winning strike.
The Hawks controlled play through the opening 30 minutes of action, firing all 13 of the game's shots and earning all four of the game's penalty corners up to halftime. Pace backstop Grace Henderson was up to the task, however, turning away four of the Hawks shots on net through the opening two quarters.
Pace picked up its pace in the third quarter, firing all four of the third quarter's shots and forcing Saint Anselm goalkeeper Mackenzie McConnell (Concord Twp., Maine) to make her only two saves of the contest. In total, Pace fired six shots in the game but placed just those two on net.
The Hawks had a chance to move ahead by a 1-0 margin in regulation time, but Henderson came way out of her net on a Saint Anselm breakaway to keep the game scoreless in the fourth quarter.
McConnell earned the victory in goal for Saint Anselm, making two saves for her first collegiate shutout. Henderson made eight saves on nine shots but conceded the overtime tally, drawing the loss. Pace finished with seven of the game's 12 penalty corners.
