COLCHESTER, Vt. – Senior
Morgan Perry (Bethany, Conn.) of the nationally-ranked Saint Anselm College softball team dominated in game one, throwing a perfect game in the 10-0 victory over Saint Michael's College on Saturday afternoon. The Hawks kept it going with a 4-0 shutout win in game two.
Perry also struck out 10 batters in the win, advancing her season total to 150, tying
Lisa Petell '99 with ninth place in the single-season strikeout category. Her perfect game was the first ever in program history, as there were only three Hawks student-athletes to throw no-hitters, but never a perfect game. The last perfect game in Northeast-10 Conference history was when
Mia Nowicki of Assumption University did it against Stonehill in the 12-0 victory on Apr. 9, 2019. Perry now joins 12 student-athletes from the NE10 who have thrown a perfect game in their careers;
Ali Maloof of Southern New Hampshire pitched two as a Penmen.
Perry also broke the all-time wins record in the entire Northeast-10 Conference with 79 in her career, surpassing
Angela Locsin of Pace.
Junior
Bre Klaiber (Ironton, Ohio) led the team with four hits, driving in two runs. Senior
Lauren Washburn (Carmichael, Calif.) and sophomore
Kylie Fitzpatrick (Danville, N.H.) had two hits each in the opening game.
With the victory, Head Coach
Jill Gagnon earned her 200th win at Saint Anselm. She now owns a 201-101-1 record over her seven years at the helm of the Saint Anselm softball program.
Later in the day, the Hawks were led by sophomore
McKenna Smith (Old Town, Maine) who recorded a new career-high 14 strikeouts in the 4-0 victory, surpassing her previous best against Gannon on Mar. 3, 2020 with 12. Smith recorded her third shutout victory of her career, throwing the entire seven innings for the Hawks.
The Hawks, the 15th-ranked team in the nation according to National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division II Coaches' Poll, improve to 20-4 and 17-3 against conference opponents. The Purple Knights fall to 5-14 on the year.
GAME ONE: No. 15 Saint Anselm 10, Saint Michael's 0 - 5 inn. (Box Score)
Ahead 2-0, the Hawks put the pedal down, generating eight runs off six hits and two Purple Knights errors in the top of the fifth inning to secure the 10-0 victory for the Hawks in game one.
Klaiber led the fifth inning off with a double, splitting the right-field gap, sending freshman
Brianna Belisle (South Burlington, Vt.) home for the third Hawks run. After a Purple Knights pitching change, the Saint Michael's center fielder dropped a fly ball, allowing Klaiber to score. Senior
Kat Stackrow (Wynantskill, N.Y.) drove in two runs off a single to right center to increase the Hawks lead to 6-0.
The Purple Knights would allow the Hawks to score again off a dropped fly ball as Stackrow scored. Fitzpatrick laid a sacrifice bunt down, advancing senior
Shannon Colson (Rochester, N.H.) to third with senior
Erin Thompson (Newton, N.H.) getting in under the tag. That run gave the Hawks a 9-0 advantage before Klaiber had her second at-bat of the inning, driving in Colson with a single up the middle.
In the third inning, Washburn singled down the left field line, bringing Fitzpatrick home from second. The strikeouts kept coming from Perry, fanning four of the next six batters, leading up to the eight-run fifth inning.
After two hits from Fitzpatrick and Klaiber to open the contest, Washburn was able to get Fitzpatrick home with a sacrifice fly in the first inning. That provided the Hawks an early advantage, 1-0.
GAME TWO: No. 15 Saint Anselm 4, Saint Michael's 0 (Box Score)
Led by a three-run fifth inning, the Hawks captured the 4-0 victory in game two, featuring freshman
Hannah Ramer (Rehoboth, Mass.) recording her first collegiate hit, while driving in two runs. Smith also fanned six batters via strikeouts in the opening three innings to shut down the Purple Knights early. In the entire game, she only allowed two hits.
The Hawks and Purple Knights were scoreless in the first two innings until late in the third inning, Colson singled through the left side, bringing home Klaiber from second. That put the Hawks up 1-0 early. Smith's no-hitter would end in the bottom of the third, surrendering a single to Carignan.
Leading 1-0 in the fifth, the Hawks scored three runs on three hits, starting with Klaiber getting herself on first with a single. Later in the inning, sophomore
Kylee Royer (Blackshear, Ga.) drove in Washburn with a two-out double down the left-field line. In her first collegiate start, Ramer followed suit in the next at-bat, hitting up the middle to score two runners, increasing the Hawks lead to 4-0. That was also the first time that Ramer drove in a run in her career at Saint Anselm.
Smith and the Hawks defense would hold the Purple Knights from earning a hit in the rest of the game. Smith improved to 4-2 on the season.
Klaiber led the game with two hits while Royer also claimed her first scored run in her career.
