No. 20 women’s lacrosse comes up short against No. 14 Assumption

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The nationally-ranked Saint Anselm College women's lacrosse team suffered a 13-10 setback to 14th-ranked Assumption University in Northeast-10 Conference action on Thursday afternoon at Grappone Stadium.

Both teams came into play ranked in the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division II National Coaches' Poll as the Hawks held down the 20th spot while the Greyhounds remain ranked in the top-15. The Hawks fall to 6-2 overall and 5-2 against league opponents while the Greyhounds improve to 6-2 on the season.

Senior Annie Richards (Reading, Mass.) led the team against the Greyhounds with four points on one goal and three assists. Richards is now two points away from earning her 100th career point. The top Hawks goal scorer was junior Jenna Balboni (Billerica, Mass.) as she netted her fourth hat trick of the season and 12th of her career, extending her point streak to 14 games. Sophomore Lexi Palmisano (Woburn, Mass.) helped out on offense, scoring twice along with four other Hawks student-athletes scoring one goal apiece. Palmisano has also netted two goals in the past four consecutive games.

Junior goalkeeper Grace Young (Merrimack, N.H.) stopped 12 shots in the loss while her counterpart, Allie Collins, saved 11 shots, earning the victory in net.

The Greyhounds jumped out to a quick 2-1 lead in the 11 minutes of the game as Olivia Catanzarite netted the first two goals for the visitors. The Hawks would respond midway through the period with a 5-1 run, giving the hosts a three-goal advantage with 10 minutes left in the first half. In that span, Palmisano recorded both of her goals on the day.

Assumption netted four straight goals to take a 7-6 lead with 4:52 remaining on the first-period clock before Balboni netted a goal with three seconds remaining before the halftime buzzer went off.

With the first 30 minutes complete, the Hawks were perfect on the clear attempt, going 8-for-8 with the Greyhounds successful on 10-of-12 clearancse. Saint Anselm also held the slim first-half shots advantage, 18-14. The second stanza began with the Hawks and Greyhounds trading goals as Jill Good and Balboni scored goals three minutes into the second half.

The Greyhounds offense picked up the pace after that point, scoring the next five of six goals to take a 13-9 lead with 11 minutes remaining. The game was scoreless until sophomore Meghan Cotraro (Beverly, Mass.) buried a shot with 39 seconds remaining, but the Hawks were unable to mount a late comeback.

Assumption finished with a 32-31 shots advantage while also firing off 25 shots on goal compared to the Hawks' 21. Junior McKenzie Robinson (Mont Vernon, N.H.) led the team in draw controls with a career-high six.

The Hawks will return to Grappone Stadium for a matchup against Stonehill on Saturday, Apr. 24 at 7 p.m. as the team celebrates Senior Day prior to the game.
