MANCHESTER, N.H. – The nationally-ranked Saint Anselm College women's lacrosse team extended its winning streak to 10 games on Thursday, defeating cross-town rival Southern New Hampshire University, 19-10.
The Hawks, the 21st-ranked team in Division II according to the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA), improve to 6-0 on the season along with five straight victories over Northeast-10 Conference opponents. The Penmen fell 2-6 on the year. The Hawks will hit the road again on Tuesday, Apr. 20 as they head to face nationally-ranked Bentley at 7 p.m.
Senior
Annie Richards (Reading, Mass.) led the team's offensive effort with eight points on two goals and six assists (2-6=8). Freshman
Alison Ferullo (North Andover, Mass.) powered the Hawks goal scorers with a career-high six goals, followed by freshman
Jess Sullivan (Wrentham, Mass.), junior
Jenna Balboni (Billerica, Mass.), and sophomore
Lexi Palmisano (Woburn, Mass.) with two scores each.
11 Hawks student-athletes each recorded a single point in the Hawks win with four having three or more points. Freshman
Isabella Stuzynski (Bedford, Mass.) and
Maggie Fitzgerald (Holiston, Mass.) earned the first point of their careers along with sophomore
Ellie Richards (Reading, Mass.) posting her first goal of the 2021 season.
Junior goalkeeper
Grace Young (Merrimack, N.H.) posted seven saves in her sixth win of the season while also claiming a team-high five ground balls. Southern New Hampshire split time between two goalkeepers as
Caela McCartney and
Megan Petko recorded 30 minutes each.
Ferullo started the Hawks scoring in the opening frame, netting three Saint Anselm goals in the first 13 minutes to hold a 3-2 lead. The Hawks kept the offense going later with a 5-2 run, ending with a Palmisano goal at 8:31. In that span, Sullivan scored two along with one on the women-up opportunity with 9:02 left in the first period.
Saint Anselm closed out the opening half with six straight goals, pushing away from the Penmen, 14-4. Balboni recorded the final goal of the opening 30 minutes with five seconds remaining. The Hawks headed into the halftime break with an 18-15 shot advantage and earned their highest goal total in the first period since Mar. 9, 2019 when Saint Anselm scored 17 against Post.
Senior
Kelsey Czarnota (Wakefield, Mass.) began a Hawks 3-0 push right out of the break with a goal of her own, extending the visitors' lead to 17-4. The Penmen would inch back later in the period, scoring six goals but could not overcome the first half deficit.
Saint Anselm finished the game 16-for-19 on the clear attempt while the Penmen went 6-for-8 while the Hawks claimed a narrow shots advantage, 30-28.
