MANCHESTER, N.H. – Junior
Allie Kelley (East Berne, N.Y.) set a program record for the most saves in shutout (47) as the Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team locked down a 1-0 victory over Dartmouth College on Sunday afternoon.
The Hawks improve to 5-10-1 on the season while the Big Green fall to 4-6-0 after splitting the home-and-home series. Saint Anselm has now toppled opponents from three different conferences, including Hockey East, ECAC Hockey and the New England Women's Hockey Alliance.
Kelley's 47-save shutout is the program record for most saves in a clean sheet and she has established the team's single-season record for saves with 556 to date.
The Hawks scored the game's lone goal at 7:23 of the opening period as freshman
Gracee Donovan (Orchard Park, N.Y.) buried a cross-crease pass from sophomore
Claire Weber (Marshfield, Mass.). Classmate
Maddy McCaffery (Weymouth, Mass.) initiated the play by chipping the puck through the neutral zone for Weber, who won a puck battle down the left boards and sent the pass to right post for Donovan.
Saint Anselm had a strong chance to double its lead at 16:34 of the first period as junior
Kenadie Cooper (Gilbert, Ariz.) won the race to a loose puck and fired a shot that beat Big Green goaltender
Maggie Emerson,
but the attempt hit the post.
Kelley held Dartmouth off the scoreboard for the first 40 minutes of play, making 31 saves through two periods, including 19 in the second period alone. The best scoring chance for the Big Green came on a redirected shot by
Jenna Donohue with 1:12 remaining in the period, which forced Kelley to slide to her left to keep the puck out of the net.
Dartmouth had an excellent chance to bring the game even in the third period as
CC Bowlby forced a turnover in the Hawks attacking end and made a quick move to her right, forcing Kelley to attack. However, Bowlby held her shot and continued to slide to her right and fired a shot into the near-empty net before senior captain
Erin Meyers (Saint Michael, Minn.) blocked the attempt to preserve the 1-0 advantage.
Dartmouth was forced to pull its goaltender with just over one minute remaining in the contest. The Big Green managed four shots with the goaltender pulled with only one making it to Kelley.
Kelley recorded her fourth win of the season while Emerson suffered the loss, making 22 saves on 23 shots on goal. Both teams had three power plays in the contest, but neither could find the back of the net on their extra-skater chances.
Saint Anselm concludes its non-conference schedule and plays its final game of the fall semester on Thursday, Dec. 2 when Brown University comes to the Hilltop for a 7 p.m. puck drop.
