MANCHESTER, N.H. – The nationally-ranked Saint Anselm College field hockey team came away with a 4-1 victory over visiting Saint Thomas Aquinas College on Saturday at Grappone Stadium.
Saint Anselm moves to 7-2 overall on the season and to 5-1 against Northeast-10 Conference opponents. The Hawks now own a 55-6 record when playing at Grappone Stadium since the start of the 2015 season.
Saint Thomas Aquinas, who the Hawks have now defeated in all six meetings in team history, falls to 1-7 on the year and to 0-4 against the league.
The Hawks were led by senior Carly LaCasse (Sagamore Beach, Mass.) and her two goals, giving her 23 in her career on the Hilltop. She currently ranks seventh all-time in career point scoring (23-8=54), jumping from ninth place all the way to seventh in team annals, passing Meagan Halligan '16 and Mia Vecchione '18 on the all-time list.
Senior Andrea McNeil (Canton, Mass.) put the Hawks ahead early as she tapped home a rebound in the game's 18th minute. McNeil's marker stood up entering halftime, sending the Hawks to the break up by just one despite a shots advantage of 11-to-1 through the first 30 minutes of game play.
LaCasse struck twice within two minutes in the third quarter, scoring her second and third goals of the season to create a 3-0 bulge for the Hawks. Her first tally of the game came off a rebound while her second strike was initially sent in by senior Maddison LeBeau (Westbrook, Maine) and tipped by both junior Maggie Malloy (Canton, Mass.) and LaCasse at the net front.
Saint Thomas Aquinas got on the board late in the game, cutting into the Hawks lead at 52:30, but sophomore Maddie Davis (Exeter, N.H.) did not miss her chance to put Saint Anselm ahead with less than two minutes left. Davis now has three goals on the season for the Hawks.
Freshman Sidney Falterer (Fairfield, Conn.) conceded one goal on two shots, earning the victory in net. Jessie Hohenstein stopped 10 shots for Saint Thomas Aquinas, but allowed four goals on 14 attempts by Saint Anselm.
The Hawks held the distinct advantage in shots (22-4) and also were awarded seven of the game's nine penalty corners.
