SHELTON, Conn. – Senior Amanda Conger (Swanton, Vt.) of the Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey squad broke the all-time career games played record in Friday's 4-1 loss to the Pioneers of the Sacred Heart University at the Rinks in Shelton.
Box Score
The Pioneers remain in the top-spot of the New England Women's Hockey Alliance (NEWHA) standings, improving to 18-10-0 overall and 15-2-0 against alliance opponents with three games left in the regular season. The Hawks fall to 13-11-3 on the year while dropping to a 10-6-1 record in NEWHA play.
Conger, recently named a finalist for the prestigious Hockey Humanitarian Award, has now played the most games in a single career at Saint Anselm, passing Jackie Guy '18 and her four-year total of 110. Not far behind, her classmates, Megan Klaus (State College, Pa.) and Kaley Campbell (Colchester, Vt.), recorded their 107th game played.
After both teams went into the first intermission deadlocked at one, Jayne Lewis helped the Pioneers distance themselves from the Hawks with two second period goals. The Pioneers would go on to a 4-1 victory, thanks to an empty-net tally by Olivia Bryant.
Only two-and-a-half minutes into the contest, sophomore Mackenzie Kaasa (North Hudson, N.H.) scored the game's first goal off an assist from junior Katy Meehan (Quincy, Mass.). Kaasa registered her first point of the 2019-20 season.
Sacred Heart responded four minutes later with a goal of their own, off the stick of Alexa Ocel at 8:44.
Senior Michaela Kane (Haverhill, Mass.) had 32 saves in the loss. After Friday's performance, Kane moved up into fifth place in program history with 714 career saves. She is also now in seventh place in the single-season saves list with 321 to her credit. Sacred Heart's Frankie Sanchez recorded 26 saves.
Sacred Heart finished with a 36-27 shots advantage, scoring the game's lone power play goal, while the Hawks were held without a power play marker. Sophomore Kelly Golini (Tewksbury, Mass.) and Meehan each won a team-high six face-offs.
