Women's ice hockey seals NEWHA top seed with win at Holy Cross

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team locked up the top seed in the upcoming New England Women's Hockey Alliance Open tournament and the NEWHA regular-season title with a 3-2 victory over the College of the Holy Cross on Friday evening at the Hart Center.

Box Score

Saint Anselm (20-2-4, 15-1-1 NEWHA) fell behind 1-0 early in the first period but scored the game's next three goals to take a 3-1 lead that it would hold on to. The Hawks entered the night one point ahead of Holy Cross (15-7-3, 14-3-2 NEWHA) in the NEWHA standings, meaning the win leaves the Crusaders three points behind Saint Anselm with just one game remaining.

All three meetings between Saint Anselm and Holy Cross so far have been decided by a single goal or ended in a tie. Earlier this season, the two teams tied 0-0 at Sullivan Arena on Dec. 8 before the Crusaders claimed a 1-0 win at the Hart Center on Jan. 13.

Senior Ashley Moran and sophomore Amanda Conger each had a goal and an assist to lead the Hawks, who had seven skaters record at least one point. Sophomore Michaela Kane established a new career high with 27 saves to win her fourth-straight start and remain undefeated this season (7-0-1).

The Crusaders grabbed a 1-0 lead at 8:09 of the opening period on a goal by Katie MacCuaig. The lead, however, did not last five minutes as Conger tied the game at 1-1 at 13:07 off assists from Caley Mueller and Nicole Saber. Less than two minutes later, Saint Anselm went ahead on a power-play goal by sophomore Haley Marshall, her seventh of the season. Conger and Moran earned assists on Marshall's go-ahead goal.

The score stayed 2-1 until late in the second when Moran gave the Hawks a two-goal cushion with her fifth tally of the season. The senior scored off assists from Kathleen LeFebre and Paige Gorecki to give Saint Anselm an important insurance goal, as Tori Messina scored on a Holy Cross power play with 4:07 left in the third to make it a one-goal game.

Kane had just one save to make following Messina's goal as the Hawks held on for the win. Twenty-eight saves from Tessie Salatas were not enough for Holy Cross, as she fell to 3-5-0 on the season despite saving a penalty shot in the second period with the Hawks ahead 2-1.

The two teams close out the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 17 on Senior Day at Sullivan Arena. The Hawks will recognize their five seniors prior to a 3 p.m. puck drop.
