Women's lacrosse falls at third-ranked Adelphi in season finale

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Breda Holland and Erica Mattila each scored for the Saint Anselm College women's lacrosse team as the Hawks closed out their season with a 19-2 loss at No. 3 Adelphi on Saturday afternoon at Motamed Field.

Eight players recorded multi-point afternoons for Adelphi (15-1, 12-1 NE10), which used a 15-goal first half to surge to a big lead. Holland scored late in the first half and Mattila grabbed a goal with seven seconds remaining for Saint Anselm (6-11, 4-9 NE10).

The game was the final contest in the careers of seniors Liv Connly, Micayla Evans and Rachel Henderson. Connly finished her career with 87 ground balls, 60 caused turnovers (fourth-most in program history) and 27 draw controls, along with two goals and one assist, in 64 games. Evans recorded 50 ground balls, 36 caused turnovers, 11 draw controls and one assist in 62 games, while Henderson compiled 43 goals and 15 assists – 39 goals and six assists this season – in 39 career games.

Emma Palumbo had a team-high four ground balls for the Hawks, while four others grabbed one apiece. Becca Shea forced two turnovers defensively, while Meaghan Sheehy set up Holland's first-half goal with an assist.

Kole Pollock registered a game-high six points on four goals and two assists to lead the way for the Panthers. Casey Zalewski and Kate Beier each notched three goals and one assist and Jacqueline Jahelka had two goals and one assist.

Adelphi scored the game's first 13 goals before Holland got the Hawks on the board with 5:15 remaining in the opening half with her 12th goal of the season off Sheehy's 20th helper of the year.

Mattila capped her second-straight 30-goal season with her 32nd tally of the year with seven seconds left in the second half to close the scoring.

Shots for the game were 29-5 in favor of Adelphi. Zoie Cavotta and Bailee Pudvar each played a half in net for the Hawks, combining for three saves. Hailey Peterson improved to 15-1 for the Panthers with two saves.

Saint Anselm finished 2017 with a 6-11 record with six of its 11 losses coming to ranked teams.
