Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey falls at #9 Kutztown, 2-0

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Saint Anselm College field hockey team played to a 0-0 game at the half, but #9 Kutztown University scored twice in the second period to secure a 2-0 win over the visiting Hawks on Saturday afternoon in Kutztown, Pa.

Box Score

The Hawks drop to 0-1 with the setback and are right back in action tomorrow afternoon when they take on West Chester University at 1 p.m.

Saint Anselm put the pressure on early as the Hawks took a pair of penalty corners and put four of their first five shots on goal through the first 20 minutes of the game. Jackie Guillemette (North Waterboro, Maine) almost gave the Hawks an early 1-0 lead as she corralled a blocked shot off the stick of Mary Nee (Canton, Mass.), but the Kutztown keeper turned her attempt away.

With the score 0-0 at the half, Kutztown broke through in the 39th minute as Madison Stewart flicked the ball over the shoulder of Katherine Sears (Northboro, Mass.) to put the Golden Bears on top, 1-0.

The Hawks had a couple of chances for an equalizer later in the period, but Emma Kincaid (West Bridgewater, Mass.) and Leika Scott (Falmouth, Maine) were both turned away by Kutztown's Chardonnay Hope.

Kutztown pulled ahead 2-0 in the 64th minute as Megan Tiwold found Courtney Ueberroth in front for a one-timer.

Less than a minute later the Hawks had a chance to cut the deficit in half as Mia Vecchione (Chelmsford, Mass.), Allia Connolly (Westford, Mass.) and Anna Drakeley (Woodbury, Conn.) all took shots on net, but they could not stuff home a goal. That would be the last chance for Saint Anselm as Kutztown reversed fields and ran out the clock.

The game was fairly balanced as the Golden Bears only held a 17-12 advantage in shots and 10-6 edge in penalty corners. Chardonnay Hope made 10 stops to pick up her first win of the year, while Katherine Sears made seven saves but suffered the setback.

Erin Collins (Auburn, Mass.) picked up a pair of defensive saves with Jennifer Brown (Freeport, Maine) adding one of her own.
