Bressler, Sears lead Field Hockey to third-straight win

RINDGE, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College field hockey team picked up their third-straight win as Maddie Bressler (Franklin, Mass.) scored in the 55th minute to lead the Hawks to a 3-2 win over Franklin Pierce University on Sunday afternoon in Rindge, N.H.

Box Score

Katherine Sears (Northboro, Mass.) made eight stops to help the Hawks improve to 3-1 on the year. Franklin Pierce falls to 2-2 overall with Meaghan Williams suffering the setback while making four saves.

The Ravens held a 17-16 edge in shots in the game, and also attempted nine penalty corners compared to just six for the Hawks.

Franklin Pierce took a 1-0 lead early in the opening half when Carly Canavan hit Kenady Kelly with a pass in front to put the Ravens on top only 6:53 into the game. Saint Anselm found the equalizer in the 26th minute as Bressler had her shot blocked down and Michelle Lemelin (Chelsea, Maine) scored in close to knot the game at 1-1.

Five minutes later Franklin Pierce pulled ahead when Danielle Harris tipped home a shot by Erin Smith to take a 2-1 lead. The Hawks answered again when Emma Kincaid (West Bridgewater, Mass.) had a long drive tipped past the keeper by Hannah Friend (North Easton, Mass.) as the game entered the half in a 2-2 draw.

Midway through the second half, Katherine Sears made back-to-back saves and the Hawks defense quickly switched fields. After a foul on the Ravens, Maddie Bressler found herself alone on the right side and beat Williams, scoring what proved to be the deciding goal.

Franklin Pierce had a chance in the 63rd minute, but Jennifer Brown (Freeport, Maine) was there for a defensive save to preserve the one-goal advantage. Franklin Pierce pulled their goalie for the final 90 seconds of the game, but came away empty-handed as the Hawks held on for the 3-2 victory.

Saint Anselm goes for their fourth-straight win next Saturday when they open Northeast-10 Conference play at Pace University in a 1 p.m. game.
