Marshall nets five goals but Women's Lacrosse falls at #9 New Haven

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Erin Marshall (Woburn, Mass.) scored five goals and added an assist for a six-point day, but the Saint Anselm College women's lacrosse team suffered a 15-11 setback to #9 University of New Haven on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action in New Haven, Conn.

Molly Beck (Old Saybrook, Conn.) added two goals and a pair of draw controls, while Caitlin Villareal (Portsmouth, R.I.), Marta Versprille (Franklin, Mass.) and Erica Mattila (Westford, Mass.) each scored a goal and added an assist while combining for five draw controls. Emma Palumbo (Sudbury, Mass.) rounded out the scoring with a goal.

Jane Bunn (St. Johns, Fla.) made 10 saves between the pipes for the Hawks (6-7, 5-6 NE-10), with Bebe Butts (Windham, Maine) leading the defense with three groundballs.

New Haven (11-4, 9-2 NE-10) held a 32-18 edge in shots in the game and also led 15-13 in both groundballs and draw controls. The Hawks went 9-of-11 on clears and committed 10 turnovers while the Chargers went 10-of-11 on clear attempts and had five miscues in the game.

The two teams traded goals to open the game before three-straight tallies from Marshall, Villareal and Versprille put the Hawks in front 5-2. New Haven answered with three straight goals of their own to tie the game at 5-5, and Marshall scored again at the 3:20 mark to take the lead back. After a goal from the Chargers' Corinne Fisher, Molly Beck scored in the final minute of the first half to take a 7-6 lead into the break.

New Haven scored the first three goals of the second half to take a short-lived 9-7 lead as Marta Versprille found Marshall for a goal to cut the deficit back to one with 19:23 to play. New Haven scored back-to-back goals to take an 11-8 advantage, before Marshall and Palumbo answered with two-straight scores to get to 11-10.

Molly Beck kept it a one goal game after a score by UNH's Caitlin O'Brien, but the Chargers scored the final three goals of the game to pull away for the 15-11 victory.

Saint Anselm wraps up the regular season with the first of two-straight home games when the Hawks host Assumption College on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
