CLERMONT, Fla. – The Saint Anselm College softball team fell 6-3 to Post and 8-0 in five innings against Gannon on Saturday at Hancock Park as the team concluded its season-opening trip to Florida.
In the opener, Kayla Kresley went 2-for-3 with a double, home run and five RBI to help Post (1-0) open up a 6-1 lead. Saint Anselm (4-8) mounted a rally in the top of the seventh by scoring twice but Samantha Esque avoided further damage to wrap up the complete game for the Eagles.
Down 6-1 with only two outs to go, the Hawks used four consecutive hits to plate two runs. Shannon McLaughlin doubled, moved to third on a single by Megan Murrell and scored on a RBI single by Jordan O'Connor to right center. Murrell was out at the plate on the play for the second out of the inning.
Amanda Bickford beat out an infield single to first and a throwing error on the play allowed O'Connor to come all the way around to make it 6-3. Esque got the last out on a grounder back to the mound and scattered 11 hits in seven innings with six strikeouts and no walks.
Saint Anselm took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on heads-up baserunning by Leindra Wilson, who scored from third when McLaughlin was caught in a rundown between first and second. The lead did not last long, as Post scored twice in the bottom of the inning on a single by Natalie Lennox and a bases-loaded walk to Kresley.
Kresley added a two-out, two-run double to right center in the bottom of the fourth and a two-out, two-run home run to left in the bottom of the sixth.
Julie LeClair, McLaughlin and O'Connor each went 2-for-3 for the Hawks. Arika Brochu fell to 3-4 by allowing four runs in four innings but struck out four. Sam Hennequin allowed two runs in the final two innings.
In the second game of the day, Olivia Gumbita threw a three-hit shutout for Gannon (6-5) to send the Golden Knights to an 8-0 win. Kherrin Morgan drove in five runs for Gannon, including a fifth-inning grand slam.
Morgan opened the scoring in the top of the second with a RBI single to score Rachel deGuia, who had doubled to start the inning. Later in the frame, Allie Salerno plated two with a two-out double to left center but the Hawks cut her down at third to end the inning.
The score remained 3-0 until Gannon scored five in the top of the fifth. The Golden Knights had just two hits but took advantage of three errors to score five unearned runs.
Bickford, Michaela Criscione and Emily Crannell each had one hit for Saint Anselm. Hennequin allowed three runs in the first two innings and McLaughlin gave up five unearned runs in three innings in her first collegiate appearance on the mound.
