EASTON, Mass. – Michelle Carbone outdueled Arika Brochu in a game that featured four combined hits as Stonehill defeated the Saint Anselm College softball team 3-0 on Thursday afternoon at Gartland Field.

Box Score

Carbone held Saint Anselm (7-13, 3-5 NE-10) to one hit in a complete game, walking two batters without a strikeout for Stonehill (11-11, 7-3 NE-10). Meanwhile, Brochu allowed just one earned run on three hits and three walks in six innings but the Skyhawks scored a pair of unearned runs to take the regular-season series by a two-games-to-one margin.

Karoline Leavitt had the lone hit on the afternoon for the Hawks, singling up the middle with one out in the top of the second. Down 1-0 in the third, Saint Anselm had runners on first and second with one out after a walk, a sacrifice bunt and another walk but Carbone escaped the jam.

Stonehill got on the board first in the home half of the second, scoring on a two-out, RBI single by Jacklyn Oleksak after Alison Sumski had doubled with one out. After Carbone wriggled out of trouble in the top of the third, she helped her own cause by plating two unearned runs with a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the frame.

With a 3-0 lead, Carbone retired the final 14 batters for the Skyhawks to improve to 3-0 this season. With the loss, Brochu fell to 4-6 but lowered her ERA to 3.18 through 14 appearances, including 11 starts. The freshman has allowed just four earned runs in 24.2 innings over her last five appearances.

Saint Anselm plays two home doubleheaders this weekend, beginning with a twinbill against Adelphi on Saturday, April 2. First pitch on Saturday is scheduled for noon at South Athletic Fields.
