CLERMONT, Fla. – The Saint Anselm College softball team dropped a pair of games on Monday, falling to No. 5 Missouri-St. Louis 7-0 and the University of Mary 7-2 in Clermont.
In the first game of the day, fifth-ranked Missouri-St. Louis (12-1) slugged four home runs and got a two-hit shutout from Hannah Perryman to defeat Saint Anselm (1-3) by a 7-0 score.
Perryman held the Hawks to two singles and two walks in the shutout and struck out 13 to improve to 10-0 this season. Michaela Criscione hit a two-out single in the bottom of the fourth and NE-10 Player of the Week Amanda Bickford led off the sixth win a single for the Hawks. Bickford moved to second on a passed ball but was stranded there.
Offensively, Missouri-St. Louis hit a pair of two-run homers and two solo shots in support of Perryman. After scoring on a single by Alicia Shivers in the top of the second, the Tritons got a two-run homer from Alex Stupek to go ahead 3-0 in the fifth.
The score remained 3-0 until the seventh, when Sara Kern, Jennah Perryman and Tynai Burrow hit back-to-back-to-back home runs to plate four runs. NE-10 Pitcher of the Week Sam Hennequin went the distance on the mound for Saint Anselm.
The University of Mary (1-5) opened up a 6-0 lead in the nightcap and went on to defeat Saint Anselm 7-2, despite a 4-for-4 game at the plate by Julie LeClair. MeLanie Rodriguez scattered 12 hits in a complete game for the Marauders with one walk and five strikeouts.
The Marauders broke a 0-0 tie after two innings with two in the third on singles by Taylor Mendez and Shawnee Zink and added one in the fourth and three more in the fifth. Mendez was 3-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored and the 3-5 spots in the Marauders' lineup went a combined 7-for-11 with five runs and four RBI.
The Hawks got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Pattie Turner hit a one-out double to right and came around to score on a single by NE-10 Rookie of the Week Karoline Leavitt. After singles by Michaela Criscione and Megan Murrell loaded the bases, LeClair hit an infield single to score Leavitt, before a pair of strikeouts ended the frame.
Turner and Leavitt each had a pair of hits in addition to LeClair's 4-for-4 game. Arika Brochu gave up six runs, just one of which was earned, in five innings of work for the Hawks and had five strikeouts with no walks. Hennequin gave up one run on two hits with three strikeouts in two innings of relief.
Saint Anselm returns to the diamond on Tuesday, March 1 against Georgian Court and Notre Dame (Ohio) at 9 and 11 a.m.
