Starzyk's three assists help women's hockey top Sacred Heart

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's hockey team got goals from four different players and three assists from Alex Starzyk to defeat Sacred Heart 4-1 on Saturday afternoon at Sullivan Arena on Smith Family Weekend.

Box Score

Martha Findley, Sara McNamara, Alison Butler and Amanda Conger each found the back of the net for Saint Anselm (4-1-0), which also got 20 saves from Maddie Scavotto in net. McNamara scored the game-winner less than five minutes after Sacred Heart (4-5-0) tied the game early in the second period and the Hawks went on to add two in the third to pull away.

Findley got the scoring started after just 2:45, tipping in a Megan Klaus shot from the point in front of the net for her second goal in the last three games. Starzyk also earned an assist on the opening goal.

The score remained 1-0 until the Pioneers got a tying goal from Brittany Smith at 3:11 of the second period. However, the Hawks responded with an unassisted goal from McNamara at 7:45 for the eventual game-winning tally. McNamara weaved her way through four defenders and backhanded the puck into the net shortly after a power play.

Saint Anselm made it a goal in the first five minutes of each period when Kaitlyn Spillane and Starzyk set up Alison Butler for her third of the year at 4:49 of the third period. Spillane tossed a puck at the net and Butler was there on the doorstep to tap it home to give the Hawks a 3-1 lead.

Conger scored her second collegiate goal via an empty-netter with six seconds remaining after good work from Starzyk on the boards to get the puck to the freshman in front of the net.

Scavotto moved to 2-0-0 on the season with the 20-save performance, allowing just the one goal. Devan Kane stopped 32 shots for Sacred Heart but suffered the loss.

Saint Anselm outshot Sacred Heart in all three periods and by a margin of 36-21 in the game. In a game that included 12 penalties, neither team was able to convert on the power play, as the Hawks were 0-for-5 and the Pioneers were 0-for-6.

The Hawks travel to Castleton on Friday, Nov. 18 for a 4 p.m. game.
