WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior Kaitlyn Stazinski (Pembroke, Mass.) scored three goals, including the 100th of her career, but the Saint Anselm College women's lacrosse team dropped Saturday afternoon's 13-9 decision at Assumption College in both teams' season finales at Multi-Sport Stadium.
The Hawks snap their four game-winning streak as they fall to 8-7 on the season, including 7-6 in Northeast-10 play, while the Greyhounds better their record to 10-7, 6-7 NE-10. Saint Anselm, which earned the No. 6 seed in the upcoming Northeast-10 Championship, will travel to take on the third-seeded University of New Haven on Wednesday, April 29 (7 p.m.) at Kayo Field. Assumption garners the seventh seed and will travel to second-seeded Le Moyne College on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
Stazinski became the seventh player in program history to reach the 100-goal plateau with her first strike of the afternoon. Junior Erin Marshall (Woburn, Mass.) tallied a game-high four points on three goals and an assist.
Stazinski wasted no time in reaching her milestone as she put the Hawks up, 1-0, just 5:02 into the contest. Amy McNeil scored for Assumption just 1:01 later to tie the game before
Marshall put the Hawks back in front, 2-1, with 21:42 left in the opening half. Assumption then scored four straight to grab a 5-2 advantage with 12:28 left in the first half.
Marshall and freshman Erica Mattila (Westford, Mass.) scored consecutive goals in a 22-second span to slice the Saint Anselm deficit to 5-4 with 11:26 to go. Stazinski then took a feed from classmate Sarah Doherty (Franklin, Mass.) and found the back of the net to answer an Assumption goal and keep it a one-score game at 6-5 with 8:58 to play.
The Greyhounds closed the half with two goals, however, including one with nine seconds left, to bring an 8-5 lead into the locker room.
After Assumption opened the second-half scoring 4:14 into the stanza, Marshall scored at 18:24 and then set up a goal by fellow junior Caitlin Villareal (Portsmouth, R.I.) exactly one minute later to pull Saint Anselm within 9-7 at the 17:24 mark.
Assumption pretty much put the game away over the next 10 minutes, however, as it scored four straight to take a commanding 13-7 lead with 6:17 on the clock. Villareal would make a free-position shot at 4:30 and then Stazinski potted a free-position strike of her own with 39 seconds left, but it was too little and too late.
Senior goalkeeper Allee Ramzi (Cumberland, R.I.) stopped three of the 12 shots she faced over the opening 41:36 as she was tagged with her first loss of the season (4-1). Junior Jane Bunn (St. John's, Fla.) made one save over the final 18:24. Jaclyn Chirco turned away eight shots for Assumption.
Saint Anselm outshot Assumption, 24-22, including 12-9 in the second half, and also held a 15-6 advantage in draw controls. The Hawks were 3-for-5 on their free-position opportunities, while the Greyhounds went 4-for-7.
The Hawks return to action Wednesday, April 29 at 7 p.m. when they take on New Haven in a Northeast-10 Championship quarterfinal matchup.
