COLCHESTER, Vt. – Senior Marissa Daly (Marshfield, Mass.) registered a game-high six points to lead the 20th-ranked Saint Anselm College women's lacrosse team to Tuesday afternoon's 17-9 victory against Saint Michael's College at Duffy Field.
The Hawks snap a three-game skid to improve to 5-6 on the season, including 4-5 in Northeast-10 play. The Purple Knights dip to 3-8, 3-7 NE-10.
Daly potted four goals and handed out two assists, while junior Erin Marshall (Woburn, Mass.) notched five points on two goals and three assists. Junior Caitlin Villareal (Portsmouth, R.I.) found the back of the net four times to surpass 150 points for her career. Senior Sarah Doherty (Franklin, Mass.) also reached a milestone as she tallied a goal and an assist to reach 100 career points.
Daly staked the Hawks to a 1-0 lead just 54 seconds in as she scored off a feed from fellow senior Kaitlyn Stazinski (Pembroke, Mass.). Marshall doubled the lead at 27:04 with a free-position goal before Daly added a free-position strike of her own exactly two minutes later to bring the lead to 3-0. Doherty set up Villareal 13 seconds later and the lead was four just over five minutes in.
Daly's assist on Doherty's milestone score nudged the lead to five at the 22:53 mark. Steph Bonewald finally put the Purple Knights on the board at 20:18, but two straight goals from freshman Emma Palumbo (Sudbury, Mass.) widened the Saint Anselm advantage to 7-1 with 12:22 remaining in the first.
Daly found the back of the cage under a minute later before the two teams alternated goals to end the half. Junior Bebe Butts (Windham, Maine) and freshman Erica Mattila (Westford, Mass.) scored for the Hawks to send them into the break with a 10-3 advantage.
Bonewald opened the second-half scoring with her third of the game and, following Villareal's second, Courtney Piper potted her second to cut the deficit to 11-5 with 24:14 left. Marshall then went off for the Hawks as she had her hands on the next four goals. Marshall set up Daly at 23:02, buried a free-position shot at 22:17 and then set up Villareal tallies at both 21:52 and 20:57 to hand the Hawks a 10-goal lead at 15-5.
Saint Michael's scored four of the game's final six goals to close the gap, as junior Katie McKenna (Danvers, Mass.) connected on a pass to classmate Michelle Kudlate (Waltham, Mass.) at 15:48 and then scored a goal of her own at 11:09.
Senior Allee Ramzi (Cumberland, R.I.) made eight saves, while Grace Gunning stopped five shots over the opening 49:15. She was replaced by Kaitlyn Wurzer, who did not face a shot over the final 10:45.
Saint Anselm held a 23-21 edge in shots, including 15-7 in the opening half. The Hawks also owned a 17-11 margin in draw controls, including 11-3 in the first stanza. Saint Anselm was 6-for-7 on free-position attempts, while Saint Michael's was 2-for-4.
The Hawks return to action Saturday, April 18 when they play host to Southern New Hampshire University at Grappone Stadium.
