COLCHESTER, Vt. – Freshman Eric Howes (Shawnee, Kan.) was one of four Hawks that captured a pair of matches – winning both of his in the No. 1 slot – to lead the Saint Anselm College men's tennis team to a 7-2 victory against Saint Michael's College on Tuesday afternoon at the Tarrant Recreation Center.
The Hawks open the Spring portion of their schedule by improving to 1-5 on the season and in Northeast-10 play, while the Purple Knights dip to 0-2, 0-1 NE-10.
Howes beat Billy Wood, 6-4, 7-6 (7-2), in No. 1 singles and also teamed with classmate Adam Weinstein (Vernon Rockville, Conn.) for an 8-5 victory in No. 1 doubles against Wood and Ben Lambert.
Freshman Brian Kavanagh (Wilbraham, Mass.) pulled out a 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 win at No. 3 singles against Sam Laves, while freshman Kyle Harris (No. Reading, Mass.) took care of Patrick Dietz, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 4 singles. Kavanagh and Harris combined for an 8-6 No. 2 doubles victory against Charlie Merry and Laves.
Freshman Alex Pearson (Kennebunk, Maine) was a 6-4, 2-6, 10-4 winner at No. 5 singles against Lambert and also earned an 8-6 No. 3 doubles triumph, along with freshman Robert Patenaude (Augusta, Maine), against Hayden Steward and Tyler Lucey.
