Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey Clinches First NE-10 Championship Berth Since '07 with 3-2 Win

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore Emma Kincaid (W. Bridgewater, Mass.) scored with 2:17 remaining in regulation to lift the Saint Anselm College field hockey team to a 3-2 victory against Southern Connecticut State University on Saturday afternoon at Jess Dow Field. The win assures the Hawks of an appearance in the Northeast-10 Championship for the first time since 2007.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS

  • Kincaid's team-leading 10th goal of the season proved to be the game winner, while sophomore Allia Connolly (Westford, Mass.) and senior Meagan Halligan (No. Branford, Conn.) both scored game-tying goals for the Hawks.
  • Junior Rose Mooney (No. Attleborough, Mass.) registered a pair of assists.
  • Junior goalkeeper Katherine Sears (Northboro, Mass.) stopped nine shots, but saw the second longest shutout streak of her career, which dated back to Oct. 13, come to an end.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Sears' streak was snapped at 223:05 – 28:12 shy of matching her career long of 251:17 (Sept. 29-Oct. 10, 2015) – late in the eighth minute when Zoe Fanolis used a nice individual effort to maneuver around Sears and put the ball in the back of the net.
  • Connolly knotted the game at the 21:00 mark of the opening half when her shot deflected off a stick and up over the Owls' goalkeeper. Sophomore Jamie McNamara (Auburn, Mass.) was credited with an assist on the play.
  • The game remained 1-1 until 2:47 into the second stanza until Colleen Murphy put the Owls ahead, 2-1, with a low shot from the right side of the circle that beat Sears to her left.
  • Saint Anselm again responded as Halligan tipped in a Mooney drive off a corner to even the match at 2-2 just 4:38 later.
  • Twenty-five minutes and some change rolled by on the clock and the game looked to be heading to overtime until Kincaid shook the monkey off the Hawks' back with a tip-in of Mooney's pass off a corner.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Southern Connecticut goalkeeper Audrey Dolloff turned away 11 Saint Anselm shots, while two other Owls made defensive saves.
  • Saint Anselm outshot Southern Connecticut, 27-16, including 11-4 in the opening half. The Hawks also held an 8-5 advantage in corners, including 4-1 in the first period.

NOTES

  • The Hawks clinch the conference postseason berth via holding tiebreakers with Bentley University and Long Island University-LIU Post, which both play each other Wednesday. Saint Anselm can finish as high as the second seed or as low as sixth.
  • Saint Anselm improves to 13-3 on the season, extending the single-season program record for wins. The Hawks have also now won seven of their last nine.

UP NEXT

  • The Hawks are back in action Tuesday, Oct. 27 at 4 p.m. when they take on Franklin Pierce University.
  • Saint Anselm wraps up the regular season Saturday, Oct. 31 at 1 p.m. when it plays host to Merrimack College in a meeting that could have huge seeding implications at Grappone Stadium.
