Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Women's Hockey Erupts for 7-1 Win at Plymouth State

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Sophomore Alison Quinn (Canton, Mass.) snapped a five-game goalless streak with an impressive two-goal, two assist performance and freshman Kaitlin Spillane (Franklin, Mass.) added a pair of goals herself as the Saint Anselm women's hockey team pounced on the Panthers of Plymouth State Saturday afternoon at Hanaway Rink, 7-1.

Fresh off a huge tie at league-leading Norwich Friday night, the win on Saturday improved the Hawks to 9-4-2 overall and 5-1-2 in ECAC East play. Plymouth State, meanwhile, fell to 2-13-1 and 2-6 in league action.

Saint Anselm opened the game in dominant fashion, outshooting the Panthers 15-3 in the first period alone en route to a 4-0 lead at the first intermission.

The prolific scoring Quinn, who hadn't scored since a 4-3 loss at Colby on Dec. 5 of this season, erupted for the game opening score less than three minutes into the game. She would tag her second score at the 1:49 mark of the second period as the Hawks put on an offensive clinic Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore Alex Starzyk (Enfield, Conn.) and junior Alex Kazmer (Crystal Lake, Ill.) each picked up an assist on Quinn's first goal and Spillane's power play tally at the 14:35 mark of the first period came off assists from Quinn and sophomore Meaghan Spurling (Byfield, Mass.). Sophomore Martha Findley (Duxbury, Mass.) made it 3-0 with a flip from fellow defenseman and freshman Jackie Guy (Saint Louis, Mo.), then sophomore Alison Butler (Danvers, Mass.) cleaned up on assists from freshman Ashley Moran (Woburn, Mass.), who picked up her first points of her career, and junior Halle Kent (Lake Placid, N.Y.) with just over one minute remaining to cap off a furious first period.

Junior Sarah Geisinger (Willoughby, Ohio) kept her point-streak alive at five straight games, assisting on Quinn's second period score. And Moran and Findley added assists in Spillane's second goal of the game midway through the second stanza to surge to a commanding 6-0 lead at the second intermission.

Starzyk notched a late goal in the third period off assists from Quinn and Geisinger as the Hawks eclipsed the 7-goal mark for the second time this season and first time since a 7-0 shutout of Nichols before the Thanksgiving holiday.

As the countdown toward the final horn began, PSU's Haley Branovan played ultimate spoiler, scoring the Panthers' first goal with just 13 seconds remaining to breakup a shutout bid for Saint Anselm senior goaltender Lindsey Brown (Mounds View, Minn.). Brown would earn the win in goal for the Hawks, improving to 6-0-1 on the year with 19 saves on the afternoon.

Saint Anselm will have one last road game on this incredible streak away from Sullivan Arena Friday night, traveling to Castleton for another ECAC East matchup. Saturday, the Hawks will play their first game at home since November 22—an eight-game and 63-day absence—as they play host to Holy Cross. All games over that weekend, including a pair on the men's side, will be part of the annual Pink on the Rink games.
