WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore Emily Crannell (Wilmington, Mass.) went 2-for-3 with a home run, along with plating the game-winning run as the Saint Anselm College softball team took down Pace University, 2-1, in the Northeast-10 quarterfinals at the UNH Softball Field.
With the victory, No. 2 seeded Saint Anselm will jump to 27-13 overall, while third seeded Pace closes out its season at 18-22. The Hawks will take on #1 (Southwest) New Haven on May 3 in the Northeast-10 Championship semifinals at 3:30 p.m. at the UNH Softball Field - home of the Chargers.
Junior pitcher Tayla Trask (Lincoln, Maine) went the distance for Saint Anselm, scattering six hits over seven innings, walking none and striking out three.
Pace pushed across a run in the fifth inning when Caitlin McCann hit a single to right center that scored Samantha Garcia. Crannell had the answer in the bottom of the inning when she hit a solo shot to left, tying the game at one. It was the second home run of the season for Crannell, the other blast coming against Pace earlier in the season on March 22.
The Hawks pushed across the go-ahead run in the sixth when Crannell knocked in sophomore Pattie Turner (Warwick, R.I.) and leveled the score 1-1. Turner led off the inning with a single through the right side and moved to third thanks to a double from junior Hannah Byrne (Lynn, Mass.).
Byrne went 2-for-3 with a double and came through with a huge double play in the sixth, to strand runners on the corners. Seniors Monique Gauthier (Canton, Conn.) and Gina Treglia (Fairfield, Conn.) as well as junior Kasey Moran (Medford, Mass.) were all 1-for-3.
The Hawks return to action May 3 (3:30 p.m.) as they take on New Haven in the Northeast-10 Championship semifinals.
