MANCHESTER, N.H. – Sophomore goalkeeper Jane Bunn (St. John's, Fla.) made a career-best 19 saves and junior Marissa Daly (Marshfield, Mass.) scored six goals as the Saint Anselm College women's lacrosse team recorded a 15-8 victory against crosstown rival Southern New Hampshire University on Tuesday evening at Larkin Field.
The Hawks improve to 9-1 on the season, including 6-1in Northeast-10 play, while the Penmen dip to 2-9, 1-6 NE-10.
After junior Kaitlyn Stazinski (Pembroke, Mass.) kicked off the scoring with a free-position goal 2:30 in, the teams alternated scores with goals by sophomores Michelle Kudlate (Waltham, Mass.) and Caitlin Villareal (Portsmouth, R.I.) being answered to leave the contest tied at 3-all with 18:15 remaining in the opening half.
Junior Kelly Pickett (Chelmsford, Mass.) snapped the deadlock at 13:50 when she received a pass from Villareal and found the back of the net. Daly then scored a pair of goals in 14 seconds with assists from Kudlate and Villareal to open the lead up to 6-3 with 12:38 to go.
Phoebe Clark, the fourth different Penmen goal scorer in the first half, pulled her team within two with 6:16 left, but Stazinski set up Daly's third of the stanza to send the Hawks into the break with a 7-4 advantage.
Sophomore Katie McKenna (Danvers, Mass.) began the second-half scoring 5:50 in before Emily King potted her second of the game to keep SNHU within three at 8-5 with 21:35 to play. A pair of free-position strikes from Villareal set off a stretch of five straight Saint Anselm goals that widened the gap to 13-5 with 4:13 on the clock.
The Penmen buried three of the game's final five goals, but it was too little and too late as Daly scored her final two of the contest to keep the final cushion at seven.
Villareal finished with three goals and two assists, while Kudlate registered two goals and two assists and Stazinski chipped in a goal and two helpers.
Bunn turned away 19 of the 27 shots she faced, while Maria Ploof made nine saves for the Penmen.
SNHU held a 34-30 advantage in shots, including 22-12 in the first half, and also won 16 of the game's 25 draw controls. Saint Anselm was 3-for-4 on its free-position opportunities, while the Penmen were 2-for-4.
The Hawks return to action Saturday, April 12 at 1 p.m. when they play host to second-ranked Adelphi University at Grappone Stadium.
