MANCHESTER, N.H. – Eleven different Hawks tallied a point in Saint Anselm's women's hockey game Saturday afternoon, including seven different goal-scorers as the hosts rolled over Nichols College at Sullivan Arena, 7-0.
Saint Anselm (6-1-1, 4-1-1 ECAC East) dictated all facets of the game against the Bison, outshooting Nichols (3-5, 1-5) 52-11 for the game. Yet it was mostly underclassmen who provided much of the scoring punch early on as sophomores and freshmen accounted for the first four goals and five of the first six assists Saturday afternoon.
It took less than three minutes before sophomore forward Alison Butler (Danvers, Mass.) cleaned up a rebounded shot by sophomore defenseman Victoria Shea (Middleton, Mass.) on the right pipe to open the long day of scoring with a goal. Sophomore defenseman Meaghan Spurling (Byfield, Mass.) made it 2-0 on a power-play strike off an assist from freshman forward Kaitlin Spillane (Franklin, Mass.) just five minutes later.
As time ticked away in the opening frame, sophomore forward Alison Quinn (Canton, Mass.) played the puck around the left side to junior forward Sarah Geisinger (Willoughby, Ohio), who found a wide open sophomore forward Alex Starzyk (Enfield, Conn.) between the circles to net one left pipe, as Saint Anselm took a commanding 3-0 lead into the first intermission.
Junior forward Marianne Kristiansen (Anchorage, Alaska) notched her first goal of the season on a flip under the Bison goaltender's glove in close on Spillane's second assist of the day. Junior forward Alex Kazmer (Crystal Lake, Ill.) also took a beautiful cross-ice feed from Starzyk on the left side, putting the puck away right pipe with just over nine minutes remaining in the period. Kazmer's goal, which was also assisted by junior defenseman Jessica Galiczewski (Kings Park, N.Y.), brought the lead to 5-0 at the second intermission.
The Hawks had plenty of opportunities to put away bouncing pucks dangerously in front of the Nichols goaltender, and did so often as Galiczewski's shot and rebound turned into a Quinn goal as the sophomore put it away stick-side. Finally senior forward Sabrina Iannetti (Lynn, Mass.) one-timed another great pass from Quinn and Spurling to round out the scoring on a power play with just over four minutes remaining.
Sophomore goaltender Hannah Synnott (Montclair, N.J.) improved to 2-1-1 on the year for Saint Anselm, also tallying 11 saves and posting her second shutout of the season Saturday afternoon.
The Hawks will take the Thanksgiving break off from competition before traveling to Colby and Bowdoin for a road trip the first weekend of December. While it will be the only games in December for the women's hockey squad, they will also spend the first 23 days of the New Year away from Sullivan Arena before hosting Holy Cross on Saturday, Jan. 24.
