Field Hockey Doubled Up at Merrimack, 4-2

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Junior Meagan Halligan (No. Branford, Conn.) scored two goals, but the Saint Anselm College field hockey team suffered a 4-2 loss against Merrimack College on Wednesday afternoon at Martone-Mejail Field.

The Hawks fall to 6-5 on the season, including 2-4 in Northeast-10 play, while the Warriors win their third straight to improve to 8-5, 4-3 NE-10.

Merrimack grabbed an early lead on a pair of goals that were scored just 12 seconds apart. Christine Zubkus made it 1-0 just 6:44 in when she cleaned up the rebound off a Hannah Magerman shot that was deflected. Then Magerman doubled the lead at 6:56 as she cut through the defense off a restart and scored on sophomore goalkeeper Katherine Sears (Northboro, Mass.) into the left side of the net.

The Warriors extended the lead to 3-0 just under six minutes later as Zubkus struck again off a Nicole Bradley feed when she slapped the ball past the right side of Sears.

Halligan finally put the Hawks on the board in the 18th minute as her initial shot was saved by a Merrimack defender, but she followed up and found the back of the cage to cut it to 3-1.

Merrimack regained the three-goal cushion, however, as Sydney Bowker's shot was tipped into the right side of the goal by Taylor Simpson to make it 4-1 in the 29th minute.

The game stayed that way until the 62nd minute when a shot off a penalty corner deflected off junior Colleen Sears (Danvers, Mass.) and Halligan put it into the back of the net off the scrum in front. That was as close as Saint Anselm would get, however, as Merrimack controlled possession for the majority of the final eight minutes.

Kate Sears made 10 saves, while Merrimack goalkeeper Madison Davis stopped five shots.

The Warriors held a 27-16 advantage in shots, while the Hawks doubled them up in penalty corners, 12-6.

The Hawks return to action Saturday, Nov. 1 at 4:15 p.m. when they play host to Adelphi University at Grappone Stadium.
