Boston – One UMass Boston goal early in the first period would be the deciding factor as the Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team was taken down by the Beacons, 1-0, Saturday afternoon at the Clarks Athletics Center.
The Hawks are dished their first loss in the ECAC Women's East and fall to 12-2-0 overall and 5-1-0 ECAC East, while UMass Boston stands even at 6-6-3 overall and in the conference.
Emily Howard struck 6:53 into the first period on a Beacon power play when she picked up a pass from Tori Pizzuto and put the puck past Saint Anselm goaltender Lindsey Brown (Mounds View, Minn.).
Neither team found the net in the final two periods, despite the Hawks holding a 33-7 shot advantage over the second and third periods. Overall, Saint Anselm outshot the Beacons, 43-13. The Hawks missed all six power-play opportunities, while UMass Boston was 1-for-3 with the extra skater.
Brown made 12 saves, while UMass Boston's Moe Bradley made 43 saves. Bradley has stopped 142 of her last 143 shots on goal.
The Hawks return to action Friday, Jan. 17 at 4 p.m. as they play host to New England College. Jan 17-18, the men's and women's hockey teams will be hosting their "Pink the Rink" initiative in support of breast cancer awareness.
