Women's Hockey Skates to 2-2 Overtime Result With Holy Cross

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team played to a 2-2 stalemate with the College of the Holy Cross on Friday evening at Hart Recreation Center for ECAC Women's East ice hockey action.

With the tie, the Hawks now stand at 12-4-4 overall and 8-2-4 in ECAC Women's East play, while the Crusaders will move to a 12-4-4 record and 6-3-4 in league play.

Saint Anselm jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 4:58 mark of the first period when sophomore Tiffany Herron (Clinton Township, Mich.) potted her ninth goal of the season. Senior Kathryn Picarello (West Roxbury, Mass.) sent a pass from behind the net to Herron, just outside the crease, who one-timed the puck into the net.

The Hawks added another goal to their tally at 13:32 when freshman Marianne Kristiansen (Anchorage, Alaska) slapped in a pass from Herron making it a 2-0 game. Herron centered a pass to Kristiansen, in the slot, who sent the puck through traffic and into the back of the net. Junior Courtney Winters (Swampscott, Mass.) also picked up an assist on the play.

Holy Cross came with the answer, however, on a Crusader power play at 17:04. Rebecca O'Quinn took advantage of a loose puck and flipped it into the net past Saint Anselm goaltender junior Lindsey Brown (Mounds View, Minn.), who was down on the ice.

The Hawks held onto their one-goal lead through the middle period as Saint Anselm held an 11-9 edge in shots on goal and was 0-3 for extra-skater opportunities.

The Crusaders knotted the game at two when Katie Goguen sent a rip to the top shelf of the goal from the right circle at 2:46 of the final stanza.

Holy Cross then burned off a pair of penalties starting at 14:08, including a 5-on-3 opportunity for the Hawks. Saint Anselm had many chances, but was unable to capitalize on any of its opportunities.

Through the extra frame, the score remained a 2-2 draw. Both the Hawks and the Crusaders each took two shots apiece in overtime.

Brown made 23 saves, while Holy Cross netminder Krista Manzanares stopped 26 of 28 shots.

Overall, Saint Anselm held a 28-25 shot advantage.

The Hawks return to action Feb. 2 when they continue their road trip and travel to Salve Regina in a 7 p.m. puck drop.
