MANCHESTER, N.H. – Freshman Chelsea Stanclift (Warren, Vt.) and classmate Alexandra Starzyk (Enfield, Conn.) each scored their first career goals as the Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team played to a 2-1 victory over UMass Boston on Friday afternoon as the Hawks opened their 2013-14 season at Thomas F. Sullivan Arena.
With the win, Saint Anselm begins the season at 1-0 overall and 1-0 in the ECAC Women's East, while the Beacons start at 0-1, 0-1 ECAC East.
The Hawks claimed the early lead just 4:13 into the game when sophomore Jessica Galiczewski (Kings Park, N.Y.) took a shot that was deflected off freshman Martha Findley (Duxbury, Mass.) and onto the stick of Stanclift. Stanclift sent a wrister from the inside of the left circle into the back of the net.
The Hawks doubled up their lead at 4:40 of the second stanza on a Saint Anselm power-play, when sophomore Sarah Geisinger (Willoughby, Ohio) sent a pass across the blue line to junior Franny Nicholson (St. Paul, Minn.). Nicholson took a shot from the top of the right circle that was tipped in at the far post by Starzyk
UMass Boston jumped on the board with 4 seconds remaining in the contest as Samantha Fallon picked up the rebound from an Alexandra Karlis shot and buried it into the back of the net past Saint Anselm junior netminder Lindsey Brown (Mounds View, Minn.). The Beacons took advantage of a 6-on-3 opportunity for their only goal, as the Hawks had a pair of players in the penalty box and UMass Boston pulled their goalie.
Brown made 22 saves, while Beacon goaltender Casey Schaejbe stopped 37 of 39 shots on goal. The Hawks blocked 15 shots in total, Nicholson with four and senior Jacqueline Bouchie (Belmont, Mass.) with three. The Hawks finished 1-5 on power-play opportunities, while the Beacons were 1-4 with the extra skater.
The Hawks return to action Saturday, Nov. 2 at 3 p.m. as they play host to Sacred Heart University.
