RINDGE, N.H. – Sophomore Meagan Halligan (No. Branford, Conn.) scored a pair of goals to lead the Saint Anselm College field hockey team to Tuesday night's 3-1 victory against Franklin Pierce at Sodexo Field.
The Hawks improve to 6-10 on the season, including 4-5 in Northeast-10 play, and move into the sixth and final playoff spot in the Northeast-10 standings for the time being. A win in their season finale Sunday would clinch a berth in the Northeast-10 Championship for the first time since 2007. The Ravens drop to 2-14, 1-9 NE-10.
Saint Anselm struck just 2:41 into the contest when sophomore Taylor Coons (Manchester-by-the-Sea, Mass.) collected the rebound from a Nicole Foley (Falmouth, Maine) shot off of Franklin Pierce goalkeeper Erin Wood's pads and slid it to Halligan, who put the ball into the back of the net.
The Hawks doubled their lead at the 14:47 mark as sophomore Colleen Sears (Danvers, Mass.) received a feed from the right off the stick of senior Elizabeth Sears (Danvers, Mass.) and put it inside the left post to make it 2-0.
The Ravens answered 2:27 later when Alesia Gleason grabbed a pass from Erin Trainor and lifted a ball over the defense and freshman goalkeeper Katherine Sears (Northboro, Mass.) from the left side of the circle to cut the deficit in half.
The gap remained one all the way into the final minute when Colleen Sears sent a drive from the right flank into the middle of the circle where Halligan beat Wood to her left to seal the win with 41 seconds on the clock.
Kate Sears and Wood each stopped six shots.
Total shots were even at 12 apiece, while Franklin Pierce held a 9-7 advantage in penalty corners.
The Hawks wrap up their regular season and will attempt to earn a berth in the Northeast-10 Championship for the first time in six years when they hit the road to take on Assumption College on Sunday, Nov. 3 at 1 p.m. Stay up-to-date with the latest news, including game previews and recaps, directly from the Saint Anselm College athletic department by liking us on Facebook and following us on Twitter @STAHawks.
