EASTON, Mass. – Sophomore Nick Schwab (Seaford, N.Y.) and freshman Chris Schwab (Seaford, N.Y.) of the Saint Anselm College men's tennis team combined to win the Championship Bracket at the Stonehill Doubles Invitational on Saturday at the Charles Watt Tennis Courts.
The brother combo captured the A-Flight Bracket with an 8-5 victory against Austin Stedman and Sam Jon of Eastern Nazarene University. The duo dispatched Ty Collins and Thomas Blatchford of Curry College, 8-0, in the quarterfinal round, before posting a 9-7 win against Eric Ringstad and Nick Hyzak of Stonehill in the semis.
In the B-Flight Bracket, senior William Condon (Mansfield, Mass.) and sophomore Kyle White (Cambridge, Mass.) earned an 8-3 victory in the quarters against Endicott College's Justin Warshausky and Eric Gandrup before dropping an 8-2 decision to Rich Degregoris and Chris Brosnan of the College of the Holy Cross in the semis.
The C-Flight Bracket nearly featured another championship run for Saint Anselm as seniors Joseph Zucchi (Methuen, Mass.) and Michael Hanna (Southborough, Mass.) met Tim Regan and Nick Berrettini of Holy Cross in the final, but suffered an 8-3 loss. The team earned an 8-4 victory against Zac Goldstein and Cody Rodrigues of Springfield College in the quarters and made the finals by beating Endicott's Andrew Zurlende and Mike Laurentano, 9-7, in the semis.
Junior Matthew Greeke (So. Hamilton, Mass.) and freshman John Joyce (Auke Bay, Alaska) fell in the quarterfinal round of the D-Flight Bracket, 8-1, against Holy Cross' Jeff Paadre and Scot Brownell. The two then lost, 8-4, against Eastern Nazarene's Rich Crooks and Weston Jordan in the semis of the D-Flight Consolation Bracket.
The Hawks return to action Saturday, Sept. 15 at noon when they return to Stonehill to officially kick off their season against the Skyhawks.
