Field Hockey Falls in First Road Game of 2012, 3-1, at Stonehill

EASTON, Mass. – Freshman Canada Stewart (Lynnfield, Mass.) potted the first goal of her collegiate career, but the Saint Anselm College field hockey team suffered a 3-1 loss against Stonehill College in its first road game of the season Thursday evening at W.B. Mason Stadium.

The Hawks drop to 0-3 on the young season, while the Skyhawks improve to 2-1.

Stonehill wasted no time getting on the board, striking just 2:46 into the contest to stake claim to a 1-0 lead. Devin Ingersoll beat senior goalkeeper Megan Sullivan (Braintree, Mass.) on her left after a give-and-go with Jessica Laurendeau.

The game stayed that way until the second half when Brittany Ford knocked in a loose ball off a rebound to make it 2-0 in the 41st minute.

Ingersoll found the back of the cage again just 1:22 later when she received a feed from Emily Coholan and drove the ball into the upper left corner to expand the lead to three.

The Hawks answered early in the 50th minute when senior Kristina Katsikis (Hanover, Mass.) sent a pass from the left that Stewart tipped in just inside the far post, but that would be the closest they would get.

Sullivan made eight saves, while Stonehill goalkeeper, Kaitlyn Curtis, stopped a pair of shots.

Stonehill outshot Saint Anselm, 24-8, including 14-3 in the opening half, and also held a 21-10 advantage in penalty corners, including 12-4 in the first half.

The Hawks return to action Saturday, Sept. 8 at noon when they play host to American International College in a non-conference matchup at Grappone Stadium.
