NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Freshman Canada Stewart (Derry, N.H.) and sophomore Bridget Davis (Mansfield, Mass.) each scored their third goals of the year to lift the Saint Anselm College field hockey team to a 2-1 non-conference victory against Southern Connecticut State University on Friday evening at Jess Dow Field.
The Hawks improve to 2-4 on the season, while the Owls drop to 3-3.
Saint Anselm wasted no time jumping out to a lead as Stewart received a pass from junior Elizabeth Sears (Danvers, Mass.) in the middle of the circle and beat Southern Connecticut goalkeeper Robin Donaldson to make it 1-0 early in the sixth minute.
The game stayed that way through the first half until the Hawks doubled their lead late in the 42nd minute. Junior Eliza Jalbert (Providence, R.I.) initiated the sequence as she fed the ball, off a penalty corner, to the right side for Davis, who slapped it past Donaldson to give her team a 2-0 advantage.
The Owls would receive a penalty stroke goal from Sarah Cebry in the 55th minute, but that was all they would get as senior goalkeeper Megan Sullivan (Braintree, Mass.) stopped the final two shots she would face.
Sullivan made five saves on the day, while Donaldson recorded three saves in 44:24 of action and Audrey Dolloff stopped both shots she faced over the final 25:36 for the Owls.
The Hawks held a slim 17-16 edge in shots, including 9-6 in the opening half, and also owned an 8-7 advantage in corners.
The Hawks return to action Sunday, Sept. 16 at 11:30 a.m. when they play host to Bellarmine University in a non-conference matchup at Grappone Stadium.
