FLUSHING, N.Y. – Senior Meghan Smith (Pittsford, N.Y.) and freshman Marissa Daly (Marshfield, Mass.) each scored four goals, but the Saint Anselm College women's lacrosse team wrapped up its weekend Long Island trip with a 15-12 defeat against Queens (N.Y.) College on Sunday afternoon.
The Hawks, who played their third game in as many days, drop to 1-2, while the Knights open their season 1-0.
Fresh off a 13-11 win against eighth-ranked Dowling College on Saturday, Saint Anselm grabbed a 1-0 lead just 1:13 in when Smith found the back of the net. After Meghan Monahan answered 48 seconds later, junior Britini Hickman (Farmington, N.H.) converted her free position opportunity and the Hawks had a 2-1 lead just under five minutes into the contest.
Following a Heather Rosen tally at the 23:37 mark, Daly put Saint Anselm up 3-2 with 22:55 remaining in the opening half. Freshman Sarah Doherty (Franklin, Mass.) followed with her first collegiate goal at the 17:59 mark to make it a two-goal game.
The Knights answered, however, with six consecutive goals, including two from Rosen, to grab an 8-4 advantage with 5:34 to go. Senior Shawna Walsh (Woburn, Mass.) closed the first-half scoring with a goal off a feed from Daly with 14 seconds left to make it 8-5.
Sarah Boucher opened the second-half scoring with a goal 2:01 in, but Daly and Smith came back with goals just 20 seconds apart to trim the Queens lead to 9-7. Rosen made it 10-7 with 26:06 remaining before Daly received an assist from Smith and cut it to two 5:01 into the second half.
Boucher made it 11-8 with 20:28 left before Smith's free position goal at the 17:31 mark again cut it to a pair. Boucher once more found the back of the net with 15:42 to play and the Knights led by three. Daly scored with just under 10 minutes to play to pull the Hawks back within 12:10, but Rosen and Taylor Sommers added goals that gave Queens a 14-10 lead with just 3:21 on the clock.
The Hawks would not go away, however, as junior Carrie Brophy (Mansfield, Mass.) scored off a pass from Hickman to cut it to three at the 2:11 mark. Smith then found the back of the net on her free position chance and it was 14-12 with 42 seconds left.
Melissa Montreuil iced it with six seconds left, taking a feed from Monahan before finding the back of the net.
Freshman Allee Ramzi (Cumberland, R.I.) stopped four of eight shots in the first 13:03 of action before giving way to sophomore goalkeeper Katherine Amato (Bedford, N.H.), who made one save in the first half and three in the second.
Queens outshot Saint Anselm, 34-32, while the Hawks held a 16-13 edge in draw controls. The Knights converted three of their five free position shots, while Saint Anselm was 3-for-11.
The Hawks return to action Saturday, March 10 at 1 p.m. when they open their Northeast-10 slate on the road against Merrimack College.
