MANCHESTER, N.H. – Andi Foss (Elko, Minn.) scored just over three minutes into the second period to tie the game as the Saint Anselm women's ice hockey team skated to a 1-1 tie with New England College
The first period ended with no scoring, however the Hawks has three chances on the power play to net a tally, while the Pilgrims had one opportunity with the extra skater. In the first frame, Saint Anselm outshot New England College, 12-3.
The Pilgrims were first to strike, just 1:15 into the second stanza, when Ashley Bonner fed a pass to the left circle to Avery Kauffman, who rifled a shot that was saved by Janice Michaud (Westwood, Mass.). Samantha Hippern picked up the rebound off Michaud's pads and beat her to the right side.
The Hawks answered back just over two minutes later at 3:18 when Foss received a pass from Franny Nicholson (Saint Paul, Minn.) and blasted a shot that made it through traffic and skipped into the right side of the net off of Lauren Hopps' left pad. Sarah Geisinger (Willoughby, Ohio) also picked up a helper on the play.
In the third, Saint Anselm held a 10-5 advantage in shots, but neither team was able to sneak the puck past their respective netminder.
In the extra frame, Rosemarie Giarrusso (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) had a breakaway opportunity after picking up a loose puck in the neutral zone and skating through the slot. Her quick shot, however, was denied by the blocker of Hopps.
With less than five seconds left in the game, the Pilgrims had a chance of their own as Marisa Roth had two quick chances, first on a shot from the left circle that was saved by Michaud and next on a follow up shot that was also smothered by Michaud.
Hopps made 39 saves, while her team blocked 29 shots and Michaud made 16 stops.
The Hawks held a 40-17 edge in shots.
The Hawks return to action Saturday, Dec. 1 at 3 p.m. when they play host to Castleton State College at Sullivan Area.
